Evening all...

Just picked up my wife a new bike, nice piece of kit but comes with typical manufacturer cheap wheels.

Looking for a good value set of Carbon Aero wheels, nothing too extreme - 40mm or something so ultimately they can be used all summer.

Where to start?

Requirements:
- Discs
- Not to crazy price wise. £600-700 if poss?

Cheers,

Russ

Probably reasonable options for the OP’s budget though?

I have a set of 50mm Prime wheels on my road bike (think they are CRC/ Wiggle own brand) and they are excellent wheels for the money.

Can't fault them and have come from Reynolds/ Zipp in the past. Albeit mine are rim brakes.

I've just built a set of Light Bicycle AR36 wheels for my winter bike and was really impressed by the quality - no discernable difference to the Enve I have on my summer bike.

They've just opened a European warehouse which should reduce delivery times albeit there is limited choice at the moment.

Hunt Aero 30. Does she need or want 40mm? They can get a bit twitchy in gusty conditions if she is used to riding normal rims. I find 30mm a good compromise for everyday riding.

Hunt are just Novatec Hubs, Pillar spokes and Kinlin rims. with a sticker on.

I bought a set of 50mm carbon wheels on DT Swiss hubs from Farsports in 2018, I'd suggest that as another good, similar option

The wheels are the same as what you would get from Hunt etc. but cheaper and with more customisation options

She's been riding one of my bikes with some Carbon Cosmic 40's. She's been happy with those in most weather conditions and likes the look - so we've been looking for something similar.

My daily has 62mm's on which is far too much on a windy day - I figured 40mm ish (but no more) would be ok?

Will look at these Light Bicycle options...

I've got a Prime 60 front and 85 rear on my TT bike and I think they are great. Not too heavy, not eye-wateringly expensive either. I don't find it excessively unstable but if it's really windy I wouldn't go out as I only cycle for fun.

https://www.parcours.cc/products/grimpeur-disc Are these any use? A little above your budget but if my experience of Hunt vs Parcours is, you'll get your wheels a lot sooner.

I ordered a set of wheels months ago from Hunt and they changed the delivery a couple times until I lost patience. Ah, but covid you say. I had the same last year with a set pre covid, months of delays. But that time I wasn't in a rush to get the wheels.

I contacted Parcours and got the wheels ordered on the thursday, they were delivered the following Friday, 8 days, with the SON dynamo hub. So far they seem good wheels. Dov, my contact and owner seems like a decent guy.

A friend contacted me and straight away asked if it was Hunt who'd let me down, so it's a common theme I feel. To be fair to Hunt, they did throw in a couple gifts with the delayed order and I got a couple bidons, caps and T Shirts but they do need to improve the initial order delivery issues.

Do you have evidence of that claim. Seems odd paying Luisa Grappone a chunk of cash to do absolutely nothing.

Hunt provide customer support, and a friendly name, ease of purchase etc.

given basically ALL rims are made in china / taiwan. there will be a direct way of purchasing, Hunt dont make their own hubs, so you can buy one of those too.

Great wheels and customer service. Can’t fault them.

Completely average wheels, and looking to earlier in the thread, the customer service isn’t that brilliant either.

Good marketing though, I will concede that.

I've got a pair in the past through these guys, they were for CX but everyone I talked to that used the in Wessex CX and further afield had nothing but praise,

https://cyclocrossracer.co.uk/collections/lowmass

I've actually just ordered another pair for the road bike, had a good 45 minute chat earlier about my requirements and went through various options, spokes, hub, rim depth etc. As above most places are just chinese bits put together in the UK, but these guys are local to me and I know I can rely on them if anything was to happen (touch wood nothing has yet)

Maybe keep your eyes peeled for a pair of Bora 35 or 50 discs on eBay? I've seen brand new ones go for about your budget. Excellent hubs if not the latest rim shape of the WTOs.

Can't vouch for these but they look bargainous: https://www.merlincycles.com/wilier-slr38-kc-disc-...
