I first used Strava a few days ago and was delighted with how well it worked for a free app.

However, this afternoon I went out and did a first stage of 15 miles. I checked the app and the clock was still running, I presumed that it would auto-pause but no problem.

I then did another couple of miles and had to stop to get my bearings. The app had stopped. Annoying.

I started it again and did what I estimate to be a further 20 miles. However on return home Strava has registered a series of six rides of a few seconds or minutes each.

Also I have only 10% battery left.

If I had paid for Strava I would want my money back wink

Is there something I am missing here, or should I just buy a Wahoo?

What phone & OS version?
Is auto-pause enabled in the app?
Are location services enabled and optimised for the app?
What terrain - open ground or dense woodland?

The new iPhone SE 14.4.2
I cannot find auto pause in the settings
Location is while using, precise location is "on".
Terrain open countryside and not far from major roads and connurbations.

Launch Strava, Record, ensure activity type = Cycling, Settings (cog button, top-right).

Auto Pause was on.

I think the app or the signal must have kept dropping out.

My wife's Wahoo seems to work flawlessly. Perhaps it is time for one for me.

Yes they’re fantastic and battery lasts several days and saves using phone

Where are you keeping the phone? Is it possible the signal is getting blocked?

In one of the back pockets of my cycling jacket.

I assume it's not made of fine wire mesh? biggrin

Mine works fine in my shorts pocket.

Is it in a case? If not and if the screen is waking up on movement then contact with your back might be stopping/starting through the swipe down that appears on the lock screen?

Sounds like your phone wasn't locked?

Shouldn't use that much battery and should just record throughout the whole ride (and show it as one ride) if locked and App running in background.

I always found I had some GPS issues with iPhone running Strava in pocket (missing sectors and generally not totally accurate) so switched to a Garmin.

I'm an Android user, but I'm always impressed how little battery Strava uses. When I commuted to an office for work, I'd just stick it on when I was getting dressed to go out riding, then "Crop" the activity whilst I was waiting for the kettle to boil after I'd had a shower at work.

Perhaps the screen stayed on? You mention the battery being down to 10%, what was it when you started?

---

Make sure you set up the security settings to "hide" your home location, and perhaps your work location too if you're commuting.

I don't know how prevalent Strava stalking is to nick bikes, but it's better to be safe than sorry.

Does Strava work with it's own app now?

The phone was not in contact with my back. It may not have been locked when I put it in my pocket, but it should have auto locked.

I will give it one more try tomorrow.

I tend to put my iphone in Battery Saver mode before taking it for a ride. Seems to reduce spurious 'button presses' in the back pocket that might open an undesirable app!

Today I ensured that I powered the screen off if I looked at my phone. It seems to have recorded correctly this time.

There was a problem with strava app connecting to sensors, and Strava recommended NOT using their own app with sensors, but to upload from a 3rd party app.

Now fixed, I see.
