Turbo trainer tyre life expectancy
Discussion
How long should I expect a turbo trainer tyre to last?
I'm old and slow with little power, so I'd expect to give a trainer tyre an easy time.
I always release the roller pressure after each session. The Cycleops has a clutch to regularise the roller pressure, and I check the tyre pressure to 110psi before each session.
This morning the gentle knocking became a real banging and I've worn the tyre out in 1,800 miles. I expect most of you will be putting more power through, so is that a good life for a trainer tyre?

Doesn't sound like much? quick back-of-envelope calculation suggests I've put over 10000 "miles" on my trainer tyre with no real signs of wear. Don't bother releasing the pressure after a ride either.
Does your trainer have a metal roller? I think there's some that have a polymer roller that are specifically not meant for use with trainer tyres.

Thanks for the replies..
The roller is metal (I think it's aluminium which explains the black marking on the tyre)
It doesn't slip that I can detect, and with me typically putting about 150W for an hour, it doesn't get hot either.
I agree, it does look like a breakdown of the tyre, I rather doubt that it has melted, but the cracking between the sidewall and the tread goes all the way round. The actual tread pattern is hardly touched. It looks as if the roller pressure is far too much, but my trainer has a clutch mechanism on the roller tightness to prevent that and provide a repeatable setting. I have greased that mech regularly to prevent binding.
I've just looked it up and I bought it in February last year, so I'll need to re-check the mileage as there's a period when the trainer was in use with a normal tyre. I've ordered a Vittoria one this time, but I'll probably ask Wiggle what they think of the failure.

Yes, it really looks like a carcass failure. I've written to Wiggle with pictures and history, I'll let you know how I get on.
The blue tyre was a Tacx trainer tyre. Now fitted a Vittoria trainer tyre, pity it's red; but that matches the flashes on the old Shimano rims, if not the trainer bike frame colour :-) Interesting so see that when fitted and set up for use at the same pressure and using the aforementioned clutch mechanism on the Cycleops, the new tyre is nowhere near as much deformed as the tacx one was.
Re-calibration runs in the morning.

Something definitely wrong there. I just changed my tyre which was around 2’ish years old with about 7000 miles on it. It was pretty flat and had been needing replaced for a good few months really. The side of it split and it still lasted another week whilst a new one was delivered, (in fairness I don’t know how long the split was there for before I noticed it.
Schwalbe turbo tyre, (my second I think), and both have done similar distances.
