I’ll admit it from the start I’m looking for a cheapish s/h hybrid.

There seems to be quite a few that look in good condition but are up to 10 years old if not older.

For example this https://www.gumtree.com/p/bicycles/adults-cannonda...

Probably overpriced for what was only a £500 bike when new but would I be better paying for something newer. Are they better specs or much the same?

Has much changed over the years?

What I’m basically doing is looking on Gumtree and comparing prices when new on the assumption that pricier is better as I know very little about modern bikes.

Not that much has changed as far as a basic hybrid bike goes. Main improvement is that you will probably get disc brakes on a new bike. Hydraulic discs are a lot better than v brakes, but cable discs are only a moderate improvement.

If you want a bike to ride now, s/h may be your best bet as supplies of new bikes are limited and waiting times can be weeks or months. Budget for a service (chain/cassette/brakes at least) and look out for ones that might be nicked;)
