Hi everyone. My little boy is nearly 16months and with spring ahead I want to bite the bullet and get a bike to get out and about.

We live with mostly country roads around us and some good hills and trails around. Therefore would probably go for a hardtail. The other requirement is to be able to take my little boy out with me. Probably favouring a seat on the back rather than the front or a trailer. I'd like to get a bike which lasts for a while so I'm getting very tempted by an E mtb. I'm also 6ft4 so need a bigger frame.

I've been doing quite a bit of research and keep upping my budget. I'm probably going to use the cycle to work scheme which saves a good chunk. I'm keen not to spend more than 3k but would happily spend less.

I've been looking at the grand canyon go and was getting close to pulling the trigger but then found info saying canyon don't recommend attaching trailers, seats etc. To there bikes. So I'm back to the drawing board and need help.

Thoughts welcome

You've mentioned you want a bike that lasts a while then related that with getting an eMTB... what makes you think an eMTB is the answer to that?!

I say this purely because I've been 'new bike hunting' and the longevity of an eMTB was something that put me off. I'm not basing this on science, but my theory based on spending a similar amount to you was that I'd end up with an eMTB with lower end components (a large chunk of the cost going on battery/motor), which would have a rougher time due to the additional weight of the bike and how much harder it'd work.

Again - all opinion and could be completely flawed, but worth considering.

A small child is much, much better sat up front, on a wee-ride or shotgun style seat.

When I said getting an E mtb to last for a while I meant rather than buying a normal mountain bike and then wanting to upgrade in 12, 24 months I'd rather stretch and get something that will meet my needs longer term.

If I had him up front on something like a shotgun I'd have thought he'd need to be a bit older to be safe there. The other worry is the riding position as I've long legs and I've read it can make cycling quite challenging with knees out.

I can only comment on the seat front...

I used a Thule Yepp Mini for my daughter from age 6 months to about 2 1/2 years- she outgrew it by that point. This was mainly used with my Santa Cruz Nomad.

We have since purchased a Shotgun kids eat as my wife now takes little'n using her Specialised Levo.

I remain highly impressed with both seats. We have used the Thule Yepp around a handful of trail centres. You cant go wrong!

I have a Haibike Xduro Urban hybrid. Chunky enough 38c road tyres that are quite happy to go off road on occasion (as long as not thick mud)

Both kids have happily gone on the back in a child seat.

The bike has the Bosch crank drive system, and has been absolutely bulletproof. Highly specced groupset too so a pleasure to ride.

I’ve also stuck a pannier on the back when my daughter grew bigger with a junior seat and foot pegs and she absolutely loved it.
