40 mile commuting round trip on relatively quiet A roads, 100% tarmac. Can probably be charged at work but I would like the range to definitely do the 40 miles if feasible.

Will only be used in dry weather, no frost etc.

Must be comfortable, so not a road bike (I have one already). I'm 48 and creaky. Neck is not good :-(

Must be a decent brand and a bit "interesting". I dont want to convert anything myself.

Budget - £2k or less would be good, but would go nearer £3k if worth the extra.

Would be good to be able to easily extend the 15.5mph limit to 20mph, I think so anyway as my average speed on my road bike is 17mph or so?

Not sure if an E-MTB would be any good? Would be comfortable but wasted on tarmac?

The 2 that jump out to me are;

Vanmoof S3 - though I dont think the speed limit can be tweaked. I like the concept.

Canyon Roadlite On AL 7.0 - probably my current favourite

Any input would be appreciated in case I have missed anything, or have made some incorrect assumptions!

Vanmoof can be increase using a 3rd party app.
However I would advise jointing the Vanmoof owners club on Facebook. They have many problems and seem to be totally unreliable. A read through the post will soon put you off one, it did me !

As I just posted elsewhere an alternative to the gravel bike option could be a spare set of wheels for a hard tail MTB. My wife has a hard tail Specialized eBike and it’s really very good; comfortable position and the range is good. 40 miles shouldn’t be an issue.

Swapping to a less chunky tyre would increase range as more efficient.

Some forums have negative feedback on their reliability but both of ours have been flawless for (nearly) two years.

Edited to add: if it’s 40 miles each way then range could well be an issue, depending on hills, amount of assist used. Get a spare charger for use at work and that would be a big reassurance and eliminate range anxiety.
