I'm after some quick release clip on rear panniers for commuting/shopping rather than touring. Ideally 20-25 liter size. Ortlieb Back Roller Plus look good but I think I'd prefer something with an extra external pocket like the Ortlieb Bike Packer plus or Vaud Road Master, but all of these are quite tall and narrow which I'm not sure about.
Any other decent brands I should be looking at?

My wife cycles to work and uses these:
LifeLine Adventure Pannier Bag
Waterproof, strong and clip on the pannier quickly.

No additional suggestions, but you see the Ortliebs everywhere for a reason. I've used mine for ~10,000 miles of year round commuting (so far) and they have been excellent, and appear to have plenty of life left in them.

Around here people use a bakfiets for that

I'm tempted by the Ortliebs for exactly that reason. I've got one of their drybags I use on the motorbike and they're very sturdy. Which one do you have? A rolltop or the lidded one?

That lifeline one looks decent but again no external pocket, with a rolltop type that's a bit more hassle to get in to I'd like a sperate pocket for wallet/keys/etc

Rolltop for me, with no pockets. Those additional items (keys/phone, maybe credit card) I'd just put in my jersey. A wallet is a bit retro. That said, they should last aaages so it might be worth just getting whichever you want to avoid any long term frustration.

Ortleib QL3 here
Or whatever it was called when I bought it

Simple and tough
Zip is sometimes a struggle but still fine after 5y of use and abuse

Has a handy internal pocket for my laptop and shoulder strap to make it practical off the bike

Cheers

Ortlieb is great, Brooks have a new range out which is fairly versatile too.

However, this wouldn't be a PH thread without a massively over the top suggestion - I borrowed a mate's Tailfin rack and bags 18 months ago, and it's haunted me ever since as they're just so good.

Top bag has additional pockets, etc.

Only reason I haven't splurged on carbon rack and dual bags/top bag is that I haven't commuted to the office since!

Ally rack and a single pannier or top bag isn't stupidly expensive, but exceptional quality.

To be honest their lightweight carbon rack would look a bit silly on my upright hybrid with full mudguards and a dynamo hub biggrin

Pretty much convinced myself to get a pair of Ortlieb Bike Packer Plus, but stock seems pretty low at the moment.

I’ve had Ortlieb for what must be 12 years now, they’ve held up really well.

Their zip closure thing pinged out of its track last year and was a bit fiddly to get back in, otherwise all good.

The quick release works well.

ortlieb roll top with quick release for me, it does have an internalmesh/zip but can be a pain to get to if the bag is full, also with the roll top, if its dry you can cram them full leaving the top open and just clip the nylon webbing together to keep stuff in

I picked up a pair of Deuter panniers for a coast to coast jaunt last year - similar available now for £35 here:
