Good morning,

We are looking to get a new bike for our eldest son who is 10 in March.

He had a Frog (brilliant) that his 7 year old brother has inherited and is now borrowing a teenage girls MTB from friends. It is heavy but he manages but not as easy as it could be. It is a proper old school steel frame bike and heavier than my own Giant MTB!

He is 141 cm tall and 67 cm inner leg so it seems he is either on a 26” wheel kids bike or an XS / S frame adults bike.

I think we want something geared (like his current bike but with thumb shifters), with front suspension and perhaps hydraulic brakes (easy to look after more than anything else).

Happy to but new or second hand and sub £400.

Any ideas?

Thank you.

I was in a similar situation recently and picked up a used Kona Shred. Its a little heavy since its designed to be a jump bike but it was half your budget and my son seems to enjoy the technical/downhill stuff more so pretty well suited. Some tweaks to the fork internals made them suitable for him but I'm just looking for some lighter wheels now.

Should be able to get something really nice used for £400 in an XS frame size.

I think at that age my bike had a bike with a battery powered box on the handlebars that made noises when you pressed a button on the handlebars. It was rad. So I'd definitely suggest one of those.

My lad's have both had these, Voodoo Nzumbi -

Great bikes and with 10% off just about within budget. However, my youngest bought his one himself with the money from selling his previous Frog bike. Paid £180 for one that was secondhand and which I genuinely believe had never been ridden - it was immaculate. It's subsequently had a hard life at Bike Park Wales, Llandegla and Leeds Bike Park - it's taken a battering and still works fine.

This looks great and seems you can get a refurbished one for under £250 which makes sense.

I got my son a XS Giant carbon/Fox forks 26er when he was 9.

The idea is as he grows out of the frame we frame swap as the parts and wheels are good quality

My boy was on a Pinnacle Kauri 26" wheel from about 9½ to 12½.

Great little bike, light weight, 1x9 gears. No suspension, but that helps with the weight. Hydraulic discs. We paid £350 and got back £200.

They were sold by Evans, but Sports Direct now.

Very similar situation, same month and everything wink
Managed to find a very nice XS 2018 Kona Fire Mountain and get it fully refreshed at significantly below your budget.
I don't think XS bikes are in great demand and often feature 26" wheels rather than on trend 27.5" or 29" - if you find something that needs a little work too then bargains can be had.

Bought my 10-y-o daughter a well-used but looked-after Trek E2 last year. It’s a 17” frame with Fox front and rear, converted to 1x10 gearing with a couple of specialist mods she needs.

It’s on 26” wheels which is no bother at this age/height, and I’ve got lots of spare wheels/tubes/tyres.

Will suit her for a number of years and take the bashing it’ll get. If it’s worth nothing at the end, that’s OK because the bike itself wasn’t much - equivalent of a couple
of hundred sterling I think, and the bits we need can all be transferred.
