Thinking ahead to summer

When road cycling what do you do to avoid sunburn?

Factor 50? Evening/Morning cycling? I got a bit of sunstroke in Italy last year I think, should have been more careful. Think I went out in the afternoon when the sun was still strong although I typically cycle when it's evening

Factor 30 particularly back of the neck and ears, and across the knees. Plus drink lots to avoid heatstroke.

Loys ofnpeoole wear a ctcking cap underneath a helmet, but ive never got on with them, water onto the cap can help if it gets particularly hot

I’ve found Ultrasun Sports Gel to be the best by a long, long way. I use SPF30 however others are available. Apply once, doesn’t wash or sweat off and protects all day. Expensive, stinks and is mucky to apply but worth it, certainly.

Edit: and yes, if you’re susceptible to such things and/or just don’t like the heat, avoid being out on the roads at midday. Mad dogs and Englishmen, and all that.

F30 applied once and morning riding has done me in the UK.

Have stuck mini bottles and topped up neck & arms whenever refilling bottles on longer / later rides . These usually abroad where it's hotter.

Nice to think about this in the warm whilst holding off going out for a ride in the current -3c smile

I use Isdin spf 50.
Protects well when I ride my bike but I really notice how good it is when I spend 6 hours mowing out in full sun.

Thanks, so sun cream is the way to go it seems

are any of those, like Isdin as mentioned, 'light' ?

I can sweat like a pig when its hot enough, I know that Piz Buin or whatever stuff we use normally will make me sweat

I’ve never struggled with P20. It’s more like an oil than a cream.

I'd highly recommend Dermalogica sport spf 50.

It feels just like a regular moisturiser and is absorbed without feeling greasy, you won't even know you've got it on.

My wife who is a redhead normally gers burned just looking at the sun but she started using it in 2017 and for the first time ever got a decent tan, even when laying on the beach all day for two weeks in 40 degrees temperatures.

I use it all year round and wouldn't consider anything else...it's about £30 a tube so not the cheapest but I have yet to find better.
