Discussion
Just wondered what people who own a Peloton think to them? I'm not an avid cyclist and don't want a turbo trainer or similar, but would like a good (best!) indoor bike that both me and the missus can use (not at the same time ). From what I can work out for similar money to the Peloton you can get a Wattbike Atom with smart technology, a Wattbike Nucleus if you don't need the smart functionality, a Stages SC3 (have these at the gym and maybe prefer them to the Wattbike Trainer) or the Peloton.
Has anybody tried all the above and can offer their opinion on what they would buy if lets say money was no object? I haven't tried the Peloton or Atom but I think I personally prefer the SC3 to the Wattbike Trainer

It depends whether you want to do spin or practise road cycling.
As a spin machine they are great but it can be done cheaper with a different bike then just the app. I have a schwinn ic8 and the peloton app is 12.99 per month and I think it’s great, but I used to do spin classes pre lockdown.
Proper cyclists tend to prefer turbo trainers and zwift.

There are two separate threads about peloton and indoor cycling but ultimately it comes down to what you want to achieve.
If you have no interest in power output or following a training plan, I’d get a simple spin bike like this https://spinning.eu/L1-spin-bike-nl/ you can still get a HR monitor to connect as a cadence sensor so can monitor some performance.
If you want to join in online classes, you’ll need the peloton bike but it’s a lot of money for what is effectively the same bike as above just marketed extremely well. DCRainmaker thoughts and review here https://www.dcrainmaker.com/2016/01/pelotons-inter... as you can’t export the data, it’s a bit pointless imho
If you want to follow a training programme and are interested in numbers, and also fancy online racing, something like the Wattbike or stages are ideal.
If you’re a cyclist and already have a suitable bike, buy a smart trainer like a wahoo kicker or an elite drive and a subscription to zwift, the sufferfest or a similar racing experience.

I'll be honest and say I'm not sure what I want to do with it. My concern is if I buy a (non smart) Wattbike or Stages I'll get bored of it quickly whereas the Peloton looks a bit more longer lasting = better vfm. pablo said:

If I didn't cycle outside I don't think I would bother with Zwift. I struggle to do it without Netflix on the ipad. I don't find erg mode and the training programmes very addictive. Group training sessions, challenges and races are better but I struggle to get into the habit of doing them.
I would go for Peloton and the proper bike, especially if that's what the wife wants.

On paper Peloton looks like an expensive rip off but in practice I can see why they sell. My wife is starting to wander about some in door exercise gear, trying to push this....Vs this is, is pretty much impossible. Might as well just sign up to Peloton now .
Just had a proper look at Peloton pricing, the actual bike price is manageable but if am reading it right you need to keep on paying £39/month on top to keep on using it? But the App subscription price is only £12/month, so to keep using the bike is pretty pricy. I presume also the screen/sensors on the bike will need the Peloton subscription to keep working, so if prices go up you have to keep paying the £££.
The bikes look looks nice with great features, but very pricey with the ongoing subscription cost.

If you want to do spinning at home then I'd definitely ignore any of the smart bikes and just spend £400-£500 on a basic but solid spinning bike. Couple it with either a Peleton or Les Mills subscription to give yourself a choice of classes. Les Mills seems to offer a lot more above Peleton if you don't just want to do spin classes.

They cant even set the saddle height up correctly for the model in their advert, so so much so, he needs to stand up....... Kinda sums it up to me [Img]https://i1.wp.com/www.roadbikerider.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Peloton-Bike-Lifestyle-02-copy.jpg?resize=650%2C396&ssl=1[/thumb]
Just grab another smart spin bike and try the variety of apps, be it Peloton or the more cycling orientated ones.

I love road cycling and even bought a Wattbike Atom last year but couldn't get on with it. I am in no way fast or super fit.
I'm currently using my roadbike on a CycleOps turbo but waiting for a Spin Bike so I can use the Peleton app properly mostly because nice spin bikes seem so much quieter. The Wattbike made quite a racket I thought.
Peleton app is free for the first 60 days which helps but some instructors insist on shouting motivational messages all the time which doesn't (for me). I just want to listen to the music.
I would love, and could afford, the Peleton bike but can't justify in my head why bike owners pay £39 and the app is only £12.99!
Unless it's actually raining, icy or dark I'll still take an actual bike out in preference but it's nice to have the option to get a sweat on.

Telling that Peloton don't think you'll need anything to protect your nice wood floor from the sweat.[Img]https://i.pinimg.com/originals/cf/5d/f0/cf5df0ee1269fd16805a0e6d3af13560.jpg[/thumb]

DCRainmaker’s latest review on the peloton+ must have took him quite a while to write. Lots of detail

Cool, I'll have a read of that over the weekend. Thankshttps://www.dcrainmaker.com/2021/02/peloton-bike-p...
I’ve just bought one.
I’ve never been a cyclist, but I used to go to the gym 3ish times a week and used a mixture of cardio equipment. After almost a year of not going due to COVID, I finally cracked and wanted some form of exercise equipment at home. The weather has just been too poor for running.
Firstly I considered a DIY bike, but smart turbos are very hard to find in stock at reasonable prices and I didn’t want to have to tinker so I abandoned that quite quickly. I also have a toddler so didn’t want something with an exposed oily chain etc in the house. Or anything noisey.
A lot of other products are simply out of stock. I would’ve gone for a Wattbike Atom but it was c. 4 month lead time when I was ordering. I also liked the look of Schwinn spin bikes but they’re impossible to find. Peloton are putting huge effort into continuing supply (article today in bbc news - they’re flying them over due to problems at the ports!).
My Mrs also has friends with Pelotons so wanted to join the “the community” and was put off by anything DIY if it was difficult to switch users.
When we ordered, I felt like I was giving in to my other half and she would become obsessed and I’d use it every now and again with a bit of YouTube. But in practice I’m completely hooked. It’s exceeded all my expectations and is far more addictive than I expected. The way my PB shows and the ranking system really encourages progression, and I’m actually quite enjoying the classes and find myself trying to aim to do live sessions (I’ve never done a spin class before this).
You are completely stuck in their ecosystem and paying a premium for the service, but for now I don’t mind. It’s also very quick to switch users as all the seat and handlebar settings have letters you can remember.
I would avoid their accessories, much cheaper elsewhere.
I get a lot of abuse from my cyclist friends when my classes pop up on their Strava (they’ve done a 50 mile ride and I’ve spent 30mins spinning with a stupid thumbnail!) but to be quite honest I’ve been using it 5x a week. That’s 5x more exercise than I was doing previously...

To me Peloton is a crazy amount of money for a static bike, and by all accounts its nothing more than a basic spin bike with a posh iPad attached to it!
The Peloton monthly cost is Crazy, when compare to the likes of Zwift/Sufferfest/Xert/Rouvy/Training Peaks (about £6-13)
For the upfront cost you could get a good entry level Adventure/Endurance bike, and a Good turbo Trainer
https://www.boardmanbikes.com/gb_en/products/2332-... - £1000
https://uk.wahoofitness.com/devices/bike-trainers/... - £699
You now have a decent enough bike, a trainer for the winter
and a saving of around £30 a month!
Zwift is a 'Game' where you can race and do a training programs
Rouvy Uses an Augmented reality
The others are full on training apps

But the turbo is out of stock... when I looked a few months ago there was very little choice for anything delivered within a few weeks and that still seems to be the case from a quick glance.
If you’re cost conscious there are likely better choices, but for hassle free experience it can’t be beaten. If you do want to compare then I’d argue you’re also missing the iPad/screen, stand/bracket, someone setting it up for you in your house (debatable due to COVID), a support line etc etc. I would barely have the spanner’s to set that up You can easily find a referral code which gets you £100 of accessories so that covers the HR monitor and a few other bits. But I’m not going to sit here and justify the cost when the monthly subscription is so high (but I used to pay far more for my gym, so my man maths works...)
My Mrs wouldn’t get on that either. So for some the Peloton just works.

The Peloton is indeed a lot of money - the reason why I haven't bought one yet!. But, I'm in the same camp as mcm87 - I don't want a bike/turbo trainer downstairs in the house (we have a large unused area at back of living room overlooking the garden which is a perfect space for this) and It's the missus that's probably more up for it than me, so the ability to swap users and ease of use is no1 priority. It also needs to keep us entertained, and to be fair whilst I haven't tried any of the other options, I don't think anything other than the Peloton is going to do it for us. The missus will also do them classes with the weights where you jump off and hump the floor etc. We are both already members of the local David Lloyd, and my issue is I don't really want to cancel that as it is nice to occasionally have a mingle/chat with other gym-goers. I also have a Founder membership @ David Lloyd so the all-in cost for our family is £89/month which is IMO good value for a gym with everything to offer. I just don't know if I can justify another monthly cost.
In an ideal world I would buy the Peloton treadmill too and put them side-by-side but at the best part of £5k, and being a tight arse, I'm waiting for the demand to slow down and I can pick one up at a discount / 2nd hand
