As the token work cyclist I’m often asked for advice on what to buy as was the case today

Having bought a new bike myself and been involved in another 2 purchases last autumn I’m pretty shocked to see the usual suspect manufacturers have stuck 10-15% on RRP over the last few months

Is this Brexit (doubt it with the US brands) or just blatant supply, demand and capitalism?

I’m talking mainstream bikes from the big suppliers featuring 105 or Ultegra

Cheers

Covid causing delays on parts. Brexit causing unknowns for manufacturers and shipping now costing 7.5x as much.

It's a perfect storm.

Covid has shafted everything. In early 2020 demand went mental - everyone decided they wanted a new bike, because riding a bike through the park was the only thing we were allowed to do. This was internationally too, not just in the UK.

Then the factories couldn't actually get the raw materials, or build the bikes, because of Covid (supply, staffing etc).

Then there is an international issue with shipping containers - they are all in the wrong place, or stuck in ports, and the price of shipping things across the ocean has absolutely skyrocketed.

And then, for us in the UK, brexit tops it off with nobody knowing what the hell they are supposed to be doing.

As for a 10-15% increase, I reckon actually think its more than that.

I'm planning on building up a new gravel bike in the spring, custom build with GRX and its looking like it's going to be an absolute nightmare.

Yep, that's the flip side, I sold absolutely massess of old junk in the spring, made a killing on ebay.

Before building the new gravel bike, my 2020 Scandal will be sold and I am sure I'll get really good money for that too.

Some of the bikes I'm looking at have gone up by the price of a decent bike!

Treks have gone up c. 11% across the board.

Doesn't matter anyway as you can get all the bike you and your family will ever need from Halfords according to NPE. Anything else is keeping up with the Joneses.

I actually steer many of my enquiries to Halfords

Our local store is excellent and I really rate the spendier Boardman stuff

Can confirm 11% for Trek, assuming you can get one which TBH is more achievable than a Rose #brexit

Sad times all round

It’s entirelyCOVID related. There has been a Global Cycling Boom so the demand has gone through the roof. At ten same time COVID shut down the global economy, factories were st in the Far East and all around the World, shipping containers were in the wrong places and had no return routes.

The prices were baked in by about May when Suppliers ran out of bikes. After this the shop workshops went mental and have basically not stopped since, they are now down to manageable levels but it’s A cold January for Heavens sake, normally shops are sweeping the floors and tidying the tools this time of year. Some bike companies will struggle to get supplies of raw materials and also componentry for 2021 so the supply issues again are baked in for the remainder of 2021. Demand is still really solid...again considering it’s January although bikes are starting to be delivered and shops are starting to build some levels of stock. Also Parts and Accessories are experiencing the same huge growth as bikes and are also in short supply, again they have had a lot of prices rises.

Prices will be high for the foreseeable and so will demand, supply will be poor.

This is the truth. A year ago we were paying around $2,500 for a 40' container. We're currently paying approaching $10,000 and it's rising. I heard an importer yesterday who has to pay $13,000 to get his container....... Scary times ahead for sure until it all settles and containers are back where they need to be............
