Last week on a ride out my rear hub stopped working in an inaccessible location. I took the wheel off and flushed the cassette in a lake . And bingo I was back riding, but left with a periodic clunk. I degreased it all when I got home, rinsed and relubed, and regreased the bearing as best I could. But the clunk remains.

So, do we think is is just lube working the way in, is it a bearing or has it got a rear hub problem?

It had been running very well until that point. I hadn't washed the bike off from the previous ride (hose was frozen) so I was thinking the dry dirt will not have helped.

In what way did it stop working? No drive or no freewheeling?

Re washing the bike off, a little bit of dirt won’t hurt!
