Commuting bike lights recommendation
Discussion
Has anyone got any good recommendations for a front light for road riding? Mainly lit streets, but will be venturing onto unlit lanes and towpaths too. I’ve got a 400 lezyne at the moment but it lacks the real punch for when it’s truly dark.
Was tempted by the halfrauds bike hut 1600 light for £50, and a a bonus I’ve got £25 worth of vouchers too, but it’s always out of stock. Was tempted but the raveman 1600 as I like the idea of a dipped beam.

I run ×2 eBay/Amazon £25 lights for my commute which includes 3-4 miles of unlit back roads.
I have one pointed down at the road which allows me to navigate pot holes etc, one is aimed higher to allow cars to see me.
There is enough light for me to travel at 20mph, but I wouldn't want to go any faster. Batteries holding charge well so far, and no issues with rain/cold.
My main problem is actually keeping vision of the road when blinded by lights from on coming traffic.

I use a cateye ampp 800 for commuting on about 50% unlit country roads.
I find the dimmest setting suitable for lit roads and then switch to the brightest for unlit.
I wanted a light with integral batteries, so obviously the run time is not great with such a small battery pack. Depends how long your commute is.
If I bought another light I'd be tempted to try the raveman with the dipped beam.

Used a Cateye Volt 800 for years, they are rock solid........ Charge time is getting longer and use time is getting shorter so battery will need replacing at some point. Great on the 800lm setting but too bright for the road. For me the mid range burn time is more important as I ride at night a fair bit.
The Volt 800 does 400lm for 2 hours no problem. I got a Volt 1300 in the Black Friday sales and again I'll not use the 1300 lm on the road, far too bright. But the big difference for me on the two lights is the 1300 will do 500lm for 5 hours, so far more practical. I ride on dark country roads that are very quiet so need decent light for long periods............
