I am sure this one has been covered a few times... however i couldn't find anything that recent so here goes...

I currently have a 2016 Specialized Roubaix road bike which i have upgraded the wheels (Mavic) and Groupset (105) over the last couple of years to keep it fresh... my plan is to transition this to be a training/winter bike and get myself a new road bike. I also used my Wattbike Atom on a fairly regular basis during the winter on Zwift.

I want a bike that i can use for 50-100km rides at weekends (relatively hilly in the Chilterns) in addition to doing a few triathlons next year (none done as yet so new to the sport!)... therefore it needs to be a bit of an all rounder.

In terms of budget i would be willing to spend up to £5k, maybe a little more, but ideally less !

I was also planning on having a bike fit ahead of making any purchase

Thoughts appreciated

If you're looking to spend that kind of cash, you really want to be considering Ultegra Di2 groupset. It's great. The world has also pretty much gone disc in the last few years too, so if you're not happy with that, you'll work harder to find something.

The land of the aerobike has moved on a lot in the last few years, an aerobike doesn't have to be uncomfortable and super racy anymore. More and more manufacturers have endurance bikes with aero improvements out this year, and in recent years.

Me? I'd be looking at the Cervelo Caledonia. Or the Canyon Endurace SLX. Or maybe the S-Works Roubaix?

Lot's of choice of bikes that will be aero over the bike leg of a triathlon, but also comfortable on a sportive.

There is so much to choose from at that price point - the world is your oyster and there is no right answer. If you are looking at a couple of triathlons, you will be just fine on a road bike as long as you are comfy in the drops - but if you do want to fit clip on tri bars, make sure you are going for a non-aero set of handlebars that will take them. For a hilly tri I wouldn't worry about trying to replicate a TT bike.

The other thing with road bikes with disk brakes is that without having to worry about rim brakes they will take 650 wheelsets - and the reduced diameter means that the tyre falls further down the stays, and so you have the clearance for cyclocross tyres, giving you a bike you can ride all year.

OK, first, if you have £5k spare and want to spend it on a bike that's fine.

My 2p: you could do all of what you plan on the bike that you have (which I am sure you know) so replacing it with a newer version about-the-same-but-current (say 105/Force, discs) could quite easily be done for about £2k. Then you would "have" £3k to either spend on doing triathlons or for upgrades (wheels and tribars maybe).

It would be entirely possible to get a proper second hand TT rig, and a fit for, and still have £3k (or more) for a very lovely endurance bike for sportives / sunny Sunday rides out.

It's what I would do, but it wasn't part of the question!

Along the lines of the Roubaix and the canyon Endurace, have a look at the Trek Domane ... SL6 = £3.3k, SL7 = £5.1k, SLR6 = £5.5k, SL7 (ETAP) £5.6k.

If you want something quicker in terms of aero for tri's, dont discount the Emonda. Something like the SL6 pro £3.3 has Ultegra and some ok wheels whilst the next model up is £4.7 (SL7) and has better wheels and Ultegra Di2. Next up at £5.5k you can have either ETAP and the SL frame or mechanical Ultegra and the lighter SLR frame.

I got the Mrs an Emonda SLR6 in September ... absolutely fantastic bike, such a great all rounder.

I'm just a Trek fan, all other manufacturers will very similar options.

Echo what has been said above.

£5k gets you a lot of bike.

If you like the Specialized, look at say the SL7. If you want to exposure other brands, the world is your oyster. Canyon are great value and I find them a really neutral ride. Ditto the TREK Emonda.

Always worth contacting pro-teams, they all sell of old bikes - I know a couple of people that have picked up Pinarello F10 and F12 from Team INEOS for around that £5k mark, and someone on here, picked up an EF Cannondale frame to build up himself.

Keep an eye out on offers too, back to the Pinarellos, they were advertising deals on both frames and full builds recently.

I know it's against the trend, but I've stuck clear of Di2. Much as I love riding with it, everyone that I know IRL has had issues with theirs, and it risks leaving you stranded.

Merlin had some cracking deals on Look bikes earlier this year. Not sure if they've got anything left now.

Thanks for the replies so far... some great stuff in there ... a few needing the usual man maths !

i should have added my lack of time/ability means i would like to steer clear of second hand or building my own (i used to love that with my track motorbikes but a lot less time these days !).

The Canyon has been mentioned a few times ... the S-Works maybe too far on the awesome bike s**t rider spectrum ... the others i am enjoying have a good look at them.

A nice position to be in ... keep the comments coming - really appreciate the ideas being relatively new to bike buying having got the bug after a charity ride in 2016..

Cracking deal for the Madone SLR ... particularly if the OP wants to do some tri's. It is an aero bike tho so doesn't have the flexibility of some of the endurance type bikes but its bloody quick.
