Yes, it's over for the long-term. Some sort of limited event in 2021 then that's it

Is this typical of box hill during the ride?https://www.guildford-dragon.com/2020/10/27/despit...
I’ve only been there mid week when there’s usually just a couple of people going up.
I’m quite near a few of these famous bike ride routes and don’t mind them at all. It’s always a bit of an event and it’s great to see people, out enjoying it or raising money.
Tbh it’s the cycle clubs that cause more problems with traffic on country lanes IMHO all spaced out or sometimes two abreast and others in a chain.
I know it’s difficult and everyone thinks differently about what’s the best way to ride and drive together on shared roads but to me, I find it more difficult to pass a club group when everyone is doing different things.

The roads are closed for Pru Ride 100, so it's irrelevant. I’ve only been there mid week when there’s usually just a couple of people going up.

Thanks for the help. Will have to try a different 100 mile ride.
Just ride 50 miles away from home, and then turn around and ride back again. Spend the money saved on the entry fee/hotel/travel etc. on coke/hookers/upgrades.El stovey said:

When I ride Box Hill it's at weekends and even peak summer there's barely more than a couple of other people on each leg of road. Leith Hill is always deserted (it's kinda in the middle of nowhere), so it's funny to hear about it being packed.

From what I gather, yes, and if you hit Leith Hill at the wrong time then you are walking up If there's any sort of incident then it bunches up to walking pace quickly, there seems to be crashes most years which causes great disruption to those behind.

Its deserted because it's harder, and further from london. It takes about ten mins to get from the foot of Box Hill to Leith, so it's not like its a problem to get to.When I ride Box Hill it's at weekends and even peak summer there's barely more than a couple of other people on each leg of road. I usually arrive at leith hill from the south via capel so do leith hill then go north to the short but steeper climb at white down lane then along ranmore lane to box hill zig zag,
You can see from the profile leith is a bigger climb but I find white down lane (in the middle) harder due to the gradient.
Someone coming from London could easily tie the three together like this if they haven’t tried them before.

Its a shame its canceled. I'd have loved to have tried it. And I moved to Dorking last year!
I've done a 100 mile ride since and I've also done the Leith hill octopus so I was hoping I'd manage the 100 mile route without too much drama, although i expect i'll be quite slow.
The local Facebook group really has a very anti-cycling mentality. A few are particularly vocal that live at the top of Box Hill, and I kinda think you knew what you were letting yourself into!

Can't say I've ever really got the appeal of sportives, even though I've done a few. Pay £30 for someone to put some signs up (even though everyone has the route on a GPS anyway) and a couple of nearly out of date gels from a feed station?
Closed roads make things slightly more appealing but several people I know have ended up getting stuck behind accidents or people clogging the road up walking up hills anyway.
There's nothing that makes a century different to a normal weekend long ride, just take a bit more food and go a bit slower.

I think the appeal of sportive is that you can pick one turn up and ride without having to research the route. All the leg work in doing so is done and its nice to ride with other and have a good chat. I did the ridelondon 100 in 2018 and I loved it. Ended up doing around 120 miles that day which is by far the longest ride i have ever done but the closed roads and lots of people cheering you on made it very enjoyable.
I kind of like the idea of a sportif where I don’t have to think about navigation and maybe have a couple of closed roads.
I definitely couldn’t be arsed with huge groups going up a hill together or bunched up at the bottom.
To me that’s always been a bit of a solitary thing, going up a hill.
Those photos of the zig zag with people everywhere put me off completely.

The appeal of a sportive for many is that they think it's a 'race' and the organisers don't discourage this with gold, silver, bronze times. I think for many its a competitive outlet in cycling, without having to actually race (because actual races are really not very easy).
I've done a couple of audaxes, R100 twice, LBL, and it's the same behaviour, but the difference between those who actually race outside of sportives etc is that they know the results mean not a lot.
Half of the chat on here after R100 is about the average speed/time they did, which was almost nothing to do with their actual ability due to the draft.
I think the above talks to the 'sharper' end of a sportive, I am sure many others just like to see something new and have some company or have the challenge of it, everyone puts more effort in when they've paid for it.
