Another cheap bike question

Can't get cheaper than free.
Cannondale M500 plus a bag of bits...
front forks have been replaced with cheapo suspension units which seem knackered, headstock has bucket load of play, gear changes hanging off (actually no bars, they're in the carrier bag, cables loose or snapped.
Can't decide whether to find some rigid forks or try to sort out the suspension ones. And headstock bearings: where's my best source for (cheap) parts. Happy with S/H stuff, it's more of a project than a restoration job but it would be nice to use as a winter bike.
