I’m after a bike £500-1000. For use mainly off road with a few hills on easy trails.

I’m 6’ 4” wondering if any style/manufacturers are better for taller riders?

I don’t seem to be able to find any bikes at all for sale at the usual suspects.

I'm 6'4 and have had a Trek Marlin 6 for a couple of years. Very pleased with it and they do extra large frame sizes. Specialized also have XL frames. I bought mine from Cycle Revolution in Essex. If you're able to get to the shop they can 'fit' you to the bike.

Best thing to do would be find a bike you like, and sign up for updates for when it's in stock. Be prepared to buy as soon as you get the email. The Vitus Nucleus is generally regarded as the best entry level hard tail at £650 from Wiggle or Chain Reaction. I got a few 'in stock' emails through for that one but was always too late, one time within half an hour. They seem to drip feed the stock. If you want a full suspension, looks at the Calibre Bossnut from GoOutdoors, Millets, etc. That's £1200 so a bit over budget but probably the cheapest decent full suspension you're gonna get. They were in stock when I looked at them recently but don't think they are currently. Again, I think you can sign up for updates.

I bought a bike from a well-known chain and they fked me over so still waiting on a refund from them/currently going through a chargeback with my bank. Bought from a less well-known chain and they had it built and ready to collect in less than a day.

I got a Specialized Rockhopper Sport. Around £650 all in, including helmet, bottle, lights, basically everything.

Thanks for the suggestions. But none of those sites have any bikes in stock or give any idea when will have some stock.

maybe there will be a glut of little used second hand bikes coming onto the market as folk's lockdown good intentions to take up cycling never continued.

A wanted ad on Gumtree/Facebook perhaps?

Check out Whyte bikes.

Some of the best rated hard tails and good value for money.

Bang up to date geometry.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I'll just have to be patient and keep looking for stock to come in.

Orange always used to be best for me (6"3'), had an Alu O and it was a great bike for the tall rider. Never felt I was too far over the font axle.

Then I had a Trek fuel and found them to fit me well too.

Specialized were the worst.

You may struggle to find a bike for that price that properly fits you. At your height, you ought to be looking at a >485mm reach measurement. Going smaller and you start to feel perched on, rather than sat in.

For comparison, my bikes (I'm 6'5") are 520mm and 535mm reach - but are used for steep techy stuff.

Whatever you pick, check the reach is appropriate - some XL sizes are more like a medium large.

Im 6ft 6", a Specialized XXL is about right for me, although I still have to use a stem riser to keep me fairly upright.

Go to a Spesh store, they’ll know exactly what you’ll need rather than other shops who will try and squeeze you onto whatever bike they have in stock.

Could be a bit harder finding a size XL at the moment, BUT that's a big price range so there's should be something - looking at the comparison sites and there's a Cannondale Cujo 2 that comes in your size/price range, a Kona FireMountain, A Boardman MHT 8.8 as well as Specialized RockHoppers and a Decathlon 29er, so still a good choice - take your pic from the XLs in this lot https://bikesy.co.uk/tag/mountain+bikes/?&minp...
Personally I'd probably go for the Boardman - Full Sus for a grand that just works plus you can find one in store somewhere if you don't like the idea of mail order

Cant beat Planet-X at this price range. Not sure how they're sizing is at the taller end but a Jack Flash or Big Dog in XL sound ideal for what you want...
