For UK based cyclists, which is better & why for a leisure cyclist like me?

British Cycling or Cycling UK?

Thinking specifically of personal liability insurance in the main.

Thanks,

Simon.

If you’re not racing, there is no reason to go with BC so I’d go with Cycling UK. You get £10m third party cover and free legal advice which sounds good enough.

Either. BC have a general ride membership with Plenty of legal cover. The race cover, as Pablo says, is not necessary.

The insurance angle is less ( if any ) different. If you want to ride about socially, and not ever get into the more ‘sporting’ side of cycling, CyclingU.K. would be fine. However, the B.C. Ride membership will do similar / the same, but there are other benefits / money off offers that you do get with B.C.

British Cycle "Ride" is £43/year, Cycling UK is £4/month, so slightly more expensive if paying monthly, but their annual option is 14 months for £48, so works out at £41.14/year.

Another option is Laka, their effectively standalone £2m public liability is £12/year. They have an offer of £1 for the rest of the year on at the moment, I just logged in and it didn't offer that to me, but I have previously been a member.

I’m sure when I started cycling, 2003, CTC (now Cycling UK) was about £8 a year!

The other thing I’d think about is what you’re funding, if that matters to you. I’ve always had the sense BC is more sport/competition oriented, CUK more leisure/functional cycle use focussed. But that might not be the case anymore.

Cycling UK are a campaigning organisation who are quite anti-motoring. That's why I switched from them to BC a few years ago.

Worth checking your home insurance - as I've ticked the cycle section to cover my and the missus bikes, we get 3rd party insurance included.

Cycling UK since it changed from CTC (Cyclists Touring Club) a couple, or so, years back, has become a charity and is now, in my opinion, more political, membership fees are in the link below, you probably want FAQ 6, I think.

The Senior membership is being abolished unless you are on benefits. Therefore over 65s go up from £30.50 to £48 a year.

I am a member and I am very unhappy about it. But what can I do?

I signed up to B.C this week. By using a code on hotukdeals I paid £37.20 for the ride option. Also included were a set of see.sense lights so one or the other worked out free. Lots of % off deals in the members sections and I may purchase the stand alone ebike insurance as it covers worldwide plus % of attached accessories for just over £100 pa.
