Morning all

Just got my fist set of clipless pedals (MTB) and been looking around for some MTB SPD shoes, and whilst on tredz I saw some good prices and variations in the Northwave range, specifically the Escape EVO or the X-Trail.

I'm not going to be subjecting them to the worst trails etc or walking around on the cleats other than back to the car / into the house etc but I don't want the ultra stiff Road SL type shoes - ideally I'd like something similar to a trainer in appearance and comfort. I don't want too bulky a shoe that roasts my feet but on the other hand a degree of waterproofing would be useful!

Anyone got any of their range and could comment on how good they are?

Also anyone with a pair from their range - could you advise are they one of the brands that it seems sensible to go up one size when buying?

Many thanks

Been using a pair on the MTB for 3 years now. No problems but none of the casual styles are waterproof.
You have to get the gortex winter Boots for that.
Don’t know of any waterproof shoes on the basis that it would run in over the top of the shoe.
If I expect wet I use waterproof socks, Sealskins or Planet X do the job.

Thanks - I perhaps overstated the waterproofing, it's not a deal breaker for me.

Can you comment on the sizing? Are they best to go one size up or go with normal shoe size in your experience?

Cheers

This! Anything more than regular socks when it's above freezing and your feet will sweat.

Had a few northwaves, good stuff, pretty no nonsense

I wouldn't worry about waterproofness, just wear overshoes when it rains

Got the Northwave Flash GTX winter boots for road cycling to minus three - https://www.wiggle.co.uk/northwave-flash-gtx-winte...

Brilliant, but medium to winter weight socks are required. But, that's me... i tend to cycle in summer in mid-weight becuase the socks feel comfy.. (i'm weird).

Anything colder than minus three i pop a pair of overshoes on as well. Anything colder than that, then well quite frankly i'm not going out.

Thanks all, that's what I needed.

Sorry to labour but did any of you specify larger size than normal shoes or not required?

They make very good shoes - still Italian owned (though I think the factory is in Romania / Thailand, same as Sidi).

The are HQ'd in Veneto, which is like Modena for clothing manufacturers - with Gaerne, Sidi, Lotto and the likes of Campag based there.

Like most Italian manufacturers, they come up small and narrow compared to UK and US brands.

I wear a 45 in Northwave, 44 in Specialized and usually a 44 or 44.5 in civvie shoes.

Northwave do come up slightly smaller.

I find them narrow for their size, so I tend to have a bit of room in the toe box if I size up. Other than that they are great shoes.

No problem with sizing.
I think that water proofing for road bikes is very different to MTB you often find your feet under water crossing streams etc and you have to pedal to get through.
Water proof socks all the time

I have the boots, can’t remember the model but quite a heavy duty item. They’re good but my feet do get wet and the water stays inside so take days to dry afterwards
Can’t say that they’re much better than shoes and overshoes
