Crashed - Broken Collar Bone
Discussion
What an unlucky morning yesterday, after Friday nights rain I thought I would find the only patches of mud on the road Saturday morning, at the bottom of a hill, only about 2 miles from home, crashed on the verge, broken collar bone. As it's a very little used country lane, I we very lucky another cyclist came the other way just after, and stayed with me until my wife turned up in the car to take me to A&E. Thanks Steve on the yellow Claud Butler if your reading, what a gent.
Enough of the rambling, I'm sure others have done it, looks like a 6-8 week healing process, and approx a further 6 weeks to regain strength and full movement. Any tips to help the healing and general discomfort, and getting back on the bike?I
Well that's the summer's riding down the toilet, on the up side, the bike seems to have gotten away with a possible bent much hanger, and straightening the shifters out!
Thanks in advance

Is the bike okay?
But seriously, scaphoid and clavicle fractures are pretty typical injuries in bike crashes. Most people tend to naturally put their hands out as they deck out, and that’s the result. I’ve had lots over the years, they never get less painful. Take it easy for a bit and heal well.

Glad you’re (relatively) okay..
Have a look through this thread about welding the bone!:

Never done a collarbone , but ribs on many a crash. Its just a case of letting nature take its course of time to heal. I know of cyclists with collar bone breaks, some have them pinned and some dont and the repair time is what it is. Sadly summer riding will be done for this year , but keeping it strapped up and keep the legs working , such as walking will keep some fitness there.
Unlucky to have happened and lucky you only did that. A friend had to have his shoulder shortened after he completely knacked his and collar bone. His right shoulder is noticeably shorter now . Was pretty nasty. Then he went and bought a motorbike...............

I've broke both of mine, the left when I was a child and the right about 10 years ago. Couple of x-rays and a sling was the extent of the medical intervention. I have a massive dent in mine now, and my shoulders are definitely not symmetrical (there goes my bodybuilding career!)
Keep it stable and take plenty of rest and you'll be back out in no time!

I broke my scapula 2 years ago, so a slightly different injury. I wasn't offered physio, or the consultant didn't think I would need it; I had it in a sling for a few weeks and then was left to get on with it. A year later, I realised it wasn't much better, little strength and awkward to sleep on that side, so I pestered the doctor and got some physio which has made a huge difference. Swimming in the sea yesterday was a bit difficult, but I can sleep on my left side again, and am less aware of it now. Before the physio, a 2 hour ride was about as much as I could take, managed over 5 hours today.
Ouch. All the best for a full recovery.
There is a very sketchy bit on my regular road route that always worries me. Its at the bottom of a fairly fast downhill single track road that goes straight back up. Ruts either side are filled with loose stone and the middle is light grass. There isn't a comfortable way of hitting it so it's very much brake hard, then pedal hard and hope!
