Does anyone do it if so what sort of schedule and program? I wanted to do something like 5x5 but I know from experience it becomes too much. Thinking of doing a very simple 4 day split aimed at strength with key compound lifts

I lifted weights properly for about 4 years then stopped at 30ish. Now approaching 32 any strength has gone which had affected biking for sure. I know biking is detrimental to lifting weights but mass isn't my aim (frankly I think being big and bulky looks properly silly in my old age).

Cycling is not detrimental to weight training and building muscle mass provided your diet is appropriate and you’re consuming sufficient energy (kcals)

Cycling is a great form of cardio to accompany resistance training and a good way to keep or get lean

I do a 3 or 4 day muscle group split; chest and triceps, back and biceps, core, legs. I cycle around 200km a week

I try to do a couple of 5x5 sessions a week, together with two or three rides; other than under-performing on threshold rides the day after lifting I've not noticed any downside.

At 52 I'm mostly lifting in the interests of slowing muscle wastage and dodging bone density issues, though.

If anything Gentle cycling will help 5x5 as it will get blood to your legs on rest days.

If you get lower back pain from squats like I do cycling can aggravate it though.

Thanks, so keep it simple sounds like the right approach. May start up with 3x5 initially
