Any recommendations for 7 year old girls bike?
Discussion
As per the title really. I have 7yo twin girls and they have outgrown their current bikes. Think they will be ready for some gears now, feels like this bike needs to last them hopefully into double digits. As I have to buy two budget is a little bit limited, ideally want to spend up to £200 per bike, possibly a touch more if needed.
TIA

I recently bought 2 Muddy Fox bikes from Sports Direct for my 9 and 10 year olds. I’m sure some people will slag off the quality, but they’re cheap at £120 each and have been great for us, As others have said, they grow out of them so quickly so I didn’t want to spend a fortune.
Not mad cyclists, but as a family we normally cycle a 10 mile round trip on a bridle way every Sunday and the bikes are doing very well on those trips.
If you want something a bit more upmarket, I’ve heard good things about Frog Bikes but they maybe slightly over your budget

I’m afraid that whatever bike you buy them at 7 is only going to last a couple of years before it is outgrown so don’t waste your money on brand new bikes, high end or cheap ones. We have had a stream of second hand Frogs or Islabikes that have cost between £120-175 each and have done both girls before being sold on for pretty much what we paid for them.
For ref, my youngest was 8 in April and has been on a Frog 62 (24” wheel) since around her 7th birthday but she is above average height. I would suggest seeing if your girls can manage one of those as they will probably not last long on a 20” wheeled bike (I.e. Frog 55 or Isla Beinn 20L). An Isla Beinn 26s is very frame similar size but with 26” wheels and that’s what our 10 year old is currently on.

At 7 you’ll need to buy a frame with 24” wheels that can also take 26” wheels if you want the bike to last until they’re into double digits. My 6-y-o son has such a bike, although it’s a touch big for him right now he has the skill/strength to manage it fine. When he’s 7, in around 9 months, I’d expect it to fit him perfectly.
My 10-y-o daughter is now on a secondhand 17” Trek FS bike with 26” wheels
My 12-y-o daughter has been riding a 19” hardtail with 26” wheels since she was about 10 and a half.
Both girls went through a 24” bike for a year or two - was really only a passing phase. It was a Liv Veer with 3-sp hub gears. Worked great.

I managed to buy an immaculate 2nd hand 24" wheeled Felt for my then 7 year old daughter a few years ago for £100. It was a bit of a stretch for her to ride it, but she managed helped by the fact it is about half the weight of your typical Halfords kids bikes. She's now 10 and shooting up in height but it still fits her fine and there's probably another year or two of growth left in it.
My 11 year old son is about 5ft 3 or 4in and still rides a 24" wheeled mongoose which I picked up off ebay for £50 when he was about 7. Same story, good quality and lightweight. I had to do a bit of work on it to bring it up to standard to give him for Christmas, but all in it cost me about £100 and has lasted well. There's a good overlap for fitting a 24" and 26" MTB, so we're in no rush to replace an excellent bike.

Agree will be looking for 24. Might be a bit of a reach at first but as others say with the bike being lighter should help them get used to it and grow into it. My 10-y-o daughter is now on a secondhand 17” Trek FS bike with 26” wheels

Agree second hand is the way to go.
Never owned a Frog or Isla but owners seem to rave about them.
We picked up a Specialized Hot Rock for £25 (just needed a rear tyre, brakes and gears setting up properly) and a Raleigh something for £30 in similar condition. Both have lasted for our two kids for five years of cycling and need to be sold on, probably for a slight profit.
Now on the prowl for a 'boys' , 24inch wheeled bike for my 7 year old lad....
My ten year old daughter is now on an old adult Carrera hybrid with 531 tubing and 200 CX group, picked up for £50. Evidently used five times in I would guess 20 years. Needed new tyres, toe-in set on the brakes but otherwise perfect.
She loves it.
We cycle most weekends up to 15 miles if it's not raining......

Just for closure x 2 Frogs purchased from Facebook. One for £120 the other for £170. Both in really good condition, cheaper one slightly older and needs a new tyre. Very happy with them.
Thank you for all your suggestions which all helped in my search
Just realised a slight typo above one was £220 (not £120) as per above. Still based on the condition I am very happy with what I paid. The cost of having twins continues Thank you for all your suggestions which all helped in my search

Frog bikes, you can get new circa £300 then in 2 years still sell it on for maybe 50% value. We paid our sons with the bike shop for next model and will do same with daughters
Was looking at new but no stock anywhere and nearer £350. One was only 12 months old and in perfect condition so feel I can resell in 18months for a decent price.Gassing Station | Pedal Powered | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
