Vintage Restoration: What is it?
Discussion
A neighbour across the road was having a clear out yesterday and was chucking out a vintage racer. Now I have always wanted a vintage bike but never got around to getting one. This is what he gave me.
I have done a bit of googling but I am still not sure what model of Peugeot it is, it has a Carbolite 103 frame (which seems to split opinions on the web) but may narrow it down as I think they only used this tubing for a short while. Anyone any ideas? Whatever it turns out to be I am chuffed as it is free and a bit of a project.
My plan is to do a complete strip down and rebuild. I spent a few hours yesterday stripping it down to components and started to clean some of the parts using a sonic cleaner and a soft brush.
I also paint stripped the forks so I can treat the rust and then prepare for painting back in the original colours.
It came apart surprisingly easily and only the front mech (simplex hydraulic one) looks to be in need of a serious overhaul. It is interesting working on an older bike as everything feels much more industrially robust and simpler than the light weight bits on a modern carbon bike.
I am hoping to rescue and restore everything bar the tyres and cables. Also not overly keen on the seat so may swap this out for something else from the same period.
Next step is to work on the wheels (they are tru which is amazing) and remove the surface rust with salt water and tinfoil.
Hopefully at the weekend I can get stuck into the frame stripping proper.
