Forgive the potentially stupid question..

I have a spare SRAM X4 shifter (bought to go on my son's frog bike before I reversed over it in a Land Rover). Would this work on an Alivio rear derailleur?

I'm trying to bring an old Kona mtb back to life so my daughter can use it - most of the Alivio shifters on eBay appear to be direct from China so I'm not convinced they'll be any good.

99% no - shimano and sram will generally work together in the sense that you can have a shimano mech and a sram chain/cassette etc., but critically shimano and sram levers move the cable a different amount so you have to pair the shifter & mech (derailleur).

I'm not familiar with the specific shifter/mech you mention, but still fairly sure it is a no, not aware of any exemptions to the above.

Thanks! From what I've since read, most shimano shifters should work which opens up the options a bit.

Sadly no for them both to work, but you dont say how many gears it has, but if it has 9, then this maybe of some use. SJS do have other versions too
