Folks, I've got a 6 night break to book for August. I've already booked a week in the Brecons beforehand. Young family of 6 and 2. 6 yr old can do up to 10 miles but 2 yr old rides with me.

I'm looking at Cannock Chase, but not sure if it's big enough to sustain 5 days of walking and riding? Does it have a variety of trails? I appreciate that holidays this year will be fairly different, no restaurants, pubs, cafes so I'm just looking for the outdoors everyday to keep us all occupied.

It’s got a few trails but I’d say not enough for 2 full days let alone 5. Why not go the Lake District? Lots of places to walk and a few forests where you can go on the bike

it has a variety of trails.

You have the dog and monkey 7 miles each.

Style cop has very difficult and hard downhill trails, i think 4 of these.

You have loads of off track courses, just ride around you will find them. Not sure on 5 days but there is some nice countryside around with canal paths.

My local trail. There’s plenty to explore in the local area but if it’s just walking and riding for entertainment then I’d look elsewhere.

Elsewhere it is then. Off to Coniston instead. I'll look at Grizedale and Whinlatter for day visits.

Stile Cop is closed for the foreseeable and it may not even reopen. There’s been quiet a lot of vandalism leading to closures then loads of riders ignoring said closures. Talking to the guys that run the races / dig days it’s future is really hanging by a thread.

There is loads of offpiste at Cannock but I’m I doubt all of it could be considered family friendly.

Head for the Dales. You could stay around Settle, some good trails start from the town and then pick up Mastilles Lane and the rides around Malham and south Dales, then head over to Gisburn nearby for the trails, which include some family friendly stuff.

how long closed for my mate went a few weeks back.

There is off piste stuff on the blue trails so very family friendly, i thought the op was looking to tick all bases you wouldn't take your kids on the dog/monkey.

Personally I'd go over to south Wales after Brecon. Cannock is ok for an afternoons blast if you live local or are passing but not as a destination

Done Sherwood pines briefly although want to go back for a weekend.

I'm going to stick to 2 bases this hol rather than moving the caravan every few days.

If you've booked Brecon why not the Peaks?

There's some great old railway trails to do such as the Tissington, Manifold and Monsal Trails.
Used to take my kids in a trailer when we lived in Sheffield.
Lots of cafes along the way for cake stops etc..
Great walking too to suit all abilities.
There are plenty of good caravan sites including Caravan & Motorhome Club sites at Chatsworth, Castleton and Buxton.

Don't forget Wales is still off limits for exercise visits and all the trail centres are still shut for the foreseeable.

This or Forest of Dean (trails are more varied and family friendly) and Symonds Yat area - great family destination

I've done Tissington & Monsal in the Peaks, and went for a good week in the Forest of Dean last year. Really enjoyed both holidays and will definitely go back. I've not explored Wales at all though.

It closed on 29th May, still no news if FE will let it continue (kind of see their point given the lack of control, no revenue generated etc....seems like a lot of hassle).

Maybe my view of the off piste is clouded by the stuff that I head too. Guess it depends on how proficient his kids are.

My 6 year old is good for distance, not for technical! My other one is sitting with me on a Wee Ride if she's not in the trailer (the seat is better than the trailer I find) so i'm not going to be doing drops with her on board!

A good route is start at punch bowl near milford, head up the gravel path, then follow top of the valley then descend into the valley. In the valley bit loads of off tracks.

Then follow to water crossing . Then ascend into ancient woods and either repeat or back into valley then onto the dog. That's just one trial and family friendly and take about 1-2 hours.

there is a camp site at CC.

Ahh, thats a shame to hear. Moved out of the area two years ago, but Cannock was my local ride fo 8-9 years before that and many a good day had at Stile Cop.

However as said, for a family outing it isnt where you would want to be anyway.
