Have a set of hope X2 levers and calipers but no discs, to replace the Avids on my MTB.

The Avids will be going on my wife's bike which currently has V brakes so want a pair of standard (non floating) discs but nowhere has them in stock, presumably because Hope are on shutdown.

Anyone know the deal with using non-Hope discs in Hope calipers? I'm sure I've read that Hope discs are a different thickness than say a Shimano disc? Would Sram discs work ok?

Im running my Hope E4s with a Sram discs as I didn't get hold of Hope discs, I got impatient and installed the brakes. Been running them since Feb and they are fine. My old bike is running X2s on Superstar comp discs and they run fine as well, sold the bike to a mate and he doesn't have any problems.

I have used Hope discs on normal brakes and I had to put some washers under the calipers to raise it , due to Hope using the different diameter discs. As for the other way round, you may find you might not be using about 1.5mm of the disc surface of the standard disc, which is negligible. Thickness seemed to work fine if I remember right !

I haven't got the caliper mounts yet as I didn't know what size discs I was going to end up with. Looking at the Hope docs it looks like they are trying to standardise on 16/180/200 mm diameter rather than the odd 183mm etc. sizes.

Are the mounts universal? i.e. for a 180mm disc on the front I just need a +20mm adapter (with the right mount types) so I don't have to stick with Hope adaptors?

You are correct in the mounting adaptors. the front is 20 mm larger diameter i.e 180mm front is the same adaptor for 160mm rear. Depends on what mounts you also have on the frame and forks , such as post or IS. If you are fitting a 180mm front then use a cheap £5 adaptor from fleabay etc .
Makes sense as to why the 1.5mm washers made the caliper and discs line up.
I dont have any Hope brakes now ( used to swear by them and now swear at them and pro 4 hubs !! , although have earlier stuff that works a dream) and changed all to Shimano , so been a while since I chopped and changed stuff. Even the discs on my commuter are now gone and just used aftermarket cheapies .

Cool that will save me a few pennies then. Need post-to-post on the front and IS (frame) to post (caliper) on the back.

These are 2nd hand slightly older ones with the union jack reservoir caps (not the Tech 3 ones), but don't think they've ever been used as they were a spare set. I've got a 16 year old set of Mono Minis on my hardtail that work perfectly though and not had any issues with their hubs. Know so many people that have had issues with disposable Shimano calipers leaking so didn't want to go down that route.

I’ve got E4 callipers on my Levo and regularly swap wheelsets - One with Sram rotors and one with Hope floating rotors and there is no difference whatsoever. I like the look of the Hopes but will likely go for Sram in the future as they don’t offer superior performance for the price difference (for the riding I do).

Hope have opened back up if you did want to go that route - they're supplying dealers and turned around the wheels/bb/headset/seat clamp order for my bike via Enigma very quickly.

Funnily enough after much googling I eventually found somewhere with them in stock (1 of each!) and a fiver each cheaper than the sram rotors- it’s pretty shocking how much stuff is out of stock everywhere when you want something specific.

Superstar components don’t seem to do discs anymore unless I’m being stupid and looking in the wrong place?

My local store told me the other day they've sold more bikes in the last two months than the previous 18...

Can well believe that, I’m in the model kit industry and sales for the last couple of months have been crazy where people have been sat at home rediscovering hobbies and keeping kids entertained.

Got the brakes pretty much built up on to the bike last night, just need to shorten the rear hose as it's still full length. SJS Cycles had the Hope discs in stock and they were actually cheaper than the SRAM ones. Used Shimano adapters in the end as they were a fair bit cheaper than others and didn't fancy using Chinese ebay stuff on a safety critical area. They also had the clearest chart of what size+type to use! All fitted perfectly.

However while I was there I found a seized bearing in the rear suspension so now I'm waiting for those before I can ride the bike again!
