Was on the A57 for a mile or two yesterday near Warbuton (not a nice road to cycle down) but it was fairly quiet, a sheddy old Focus Mk1 appeared and came up slowly, and someone shouted "BOO" at me very loudly from the open window.

Then the lights changed so they had to stop, so I was going to say hello, they must have seen me approaching so they ran the red light rather than meet me in person biggrin

Pretty low grade, seen it before but not very often, had some young dheads in an old Corsa try similar by getting along side and slamming the brakes on to make the tyres screech.

A lad I know got a milkshake thrown at him.

What kind of slack jawed yokel does stuff like that ? and what are your stories ?

Had someone drive past me (also in a sheddy mk1 focus) in an otherwise deserted road and blare the horn just as they went past me. Scared the st out of me biggrin

Had a cock in a Ford Focus sound the horn right behind me this morning which scared the $hit out of me.
Might have been at the van infront.

My brother (who lives in Glasgow) had some guys pull alongside and grab his arm and speed up.

Luckily he pulled free.

I was just about to start a similar thread after my experience today. Large white van overtook me fairly sensibly on a wide quiet rural road and the passenger shouts something at me. I haven’t got a clue what he shouted but he seemed amused rather than angry, so maybe I missed some clever cutting wit.

But my question to the forum is “why?”

It’s not as if cyclists are a rarity, or something to be remarked upon whenever encountered. Equally it’s not as if travelling in the passenger seat of a van is a rarity and cause for attention seeking.

I've got Fly cameras front and rear for any episodes like this, the potential in that case doesn't bear thinking about!

I think that you will find the abuse comes from people. Cars are just chunks of metal an plastic, so with the notable exceptions of Herbie, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and Kitt, I don't think they can abuse anyone.

I would be a bit wary of Christine though.....

Loads of knobs about, that’s the end of it really, they want to see you fall off like some YouTube prank that’s supposedly funny these days.

On a side note, the amount of cyclist out on the road at the moment is crazy. I’m passing so many on country roads, I’m sure the knobs around are just getting pissed off at it, I see so many dodgy passing that I don’t think I would ever go out on the road on my bike again. It’s scary out there!

Generally I've found it about average % for the volume of traffic I see I think. Had a REALLY close pass today from a white van, the closest I've ever had annoyingly I wasn't using my GoPro because I didn't charge it up, so I had to settle for bellowing expletives, which I think startled the pedestrians alongside at the time... (Side note, plain white vans are usually pretty good around here, better than *marked* vans and regular cars)

Too many to even begin to remember.

What I do remember though is that not one of them stopped to follow up on their abuse, even when asked.

I have a little bar end mirror, I know it breaks the velominati rules but I find it invaluable and I think drivers sometimes clock they are visible as well.

It feels like drivers' attitude has got worse towards cyclists. Social media is full of the anti-cycling rhetoric, broken record.

Last week I had a close pass on a bend that goes immediately into a mini roundabout where the driver had to stop. I did pull alongside and ask what the point was. He called me a c**t, said I shouldn't be in the middle of road (I was riding at 25mph in 30mph taking a smoother line thinking no one would overtake on a corner leading to a roundabout) and drove off only to see the traffic light turn red ahead of him. He chose to drive through the red light than face having me stop next to him. And they say cyclists run red lights...

Another driver accelerated towards me in my lane through a traffic calming island and give way sign. Heavens forbid they should be delayed by a few seconds. I wasn't hanging about, a lift off would have given me time to pass.

Seriously considering a camera.

It’s getting worse - has some hachet faced bh on a horse yelled‘single file’ at us yesterday (She was on that breeds of horse with two aholes, one at the back and one in the middle). And had two old farts on motorbikes pull along side with the same helpful message.
  1. 1 they are both totally ignorant of the law and the Highway Code
  2. 2 how st a biker must you be if you struggle to get past a cyclist when you’ve got in excess of 200hp per ton at your disposal.
They never stop to discuss it as they are chicken st and not got the balls to stand up to you.

Possibly the worst one I've had tonight, single-track road, 7% climb, which is barely wide enough for a car, then taking into account all the overgrown bushes either side, an A-class managed to squeeze past me!

Albeit not as exciting as getting a beep and an angry fist from a middle aged bloke in a Mondeo as he skimmed past me when there was a full road available. Decided some return abuse was in order, then he pulled over and jumped out the car, closely followed by the driver of the car behind, who then stuck up for me. It all calmed down when the driver from the car behind pointed out his dash cam which he was happy to share, bloke in the Mondeo got back in his car and disappeared, must have dawned on him that he was a bell end and he didn't want me to use the dash cam vid, as I found him waiting in the middle of the road, 2 mins round the corner to flag me down and apologise... The driver of the car behind never did email me the video come to think of it....

I do see the Mondeo from time to time, remember the private reg number. Wonder if he will do it again one day...

Kind of related, but I have invented a new game with all of the cyclists about now. It’s called “sticking strictly to the law”.

What you do is drive along the road and when you come across a cyclists you do not pass them on solid white lines, blind bends or crests, keep well back and wait. Then the second it is safe to go you indicate, pull out and floor it. You then see the red faced idiot who was weaving around and tailgating disappear in to the distance.

To be fair I have played this game for a long time, it has just got more common.

I do that, never, ever jump a red light even in temporary road work traffic lights, dont job onto the pavement if clear, always looking in my bar end mirror and keeping as far in for drivers as I possibly can, only coming out to dissuade sketchy overtakes through width restrictions.

Had a maccy d's milkshake thrown at me for no reason (thankfully it missed).

Had a van pull along side me for the passenger to yell a load of abuse at me so he could get a reaction to record on his phone. He must have been disappointed that I just ignored it hehe
