Yesterday I was very fortunate on my new bike to not be seriously hurt

The front axle bolt either worked loose or, in my opinion, was never properly fastened

Not having a fixed front for years, I wonder is thread lock necessary?

My wifes new bike has a form of anti thread loosening compound on the threads on the front and rear axles . Its not common practice to put a thread lock as such in case of needing to remove the wheel. Other bikes I have , seem to stay tight if the axles are sensibly nipped up and even have a torque value on the bolts to make sure you do keep it done up correctly.

Normally no need for threadlock with a bolt-in through axle - just make sure it's fully tight.

Using such axles currently on a gravel bike that gets lots of vibration and no sign of any movement with axles

Maybe yours was never fully tightened?

You definitely want to be checking the thru axles before each ride. Glad you’re ok
