Basically not sustainable as it is, it has never made money. I won't be paying.
I can't see why they don't go down the advertising route with paid click throughs. Surely the likes of wiggle would be targeting adds at their exact target market who would be seeing these adds on a regular / daily basis.

They provide an excellent service that costs them money, why should (all of) it be free?
You can still use it for tracking your activities and seeing your friends etc for nothing.
There’s always been a free bit and a paid bit with more functionality, all that’s happened is more has moved into the paid bit.
Most fitness apps do this.

Strava have raised money from Venture Capitalists.
They need to deliver 'growth' as the long term view is that VC's want to cash out, at many many multiples of their investment.
'Free' apps are only free so they kill the competition, they are burning cash and once they are dominant, then they will exploit all revenue opportunites.

How much ad budget do you reckon any company like Wiggle has? To make significant sums through advertising you probably need to be a little less niche, and likely target more mainstream brands.
Strava have given users a hell of a lot for a long time, WITHOUT plastering the site in ads, I think its not much to ask £1 a week.

If everyone was a freeloader, none of these services and apps would exist.

Noticed this today too, was enjoying it, won't be paying for it. Would rather it was ad based.
Well it isn't.So you are going to bin something you like for the sake of 10p a day lol? Lunatics everywhere!
Haven't used Strava in a while now, they need to clamp down on ebike users setting KOM's.
I find google fitness does a decent enough job now when cycling is selected as the workout, can't be bothered anymore uploading from my Garmin as it doesn't seem to pickup the wattmeter and RPM via ANT half the time so having the ride from my android wear using GPS and heartrate seems decent enough.

We appreciate you are a passionate Strava lycra afficienado, but no need to 'lol lunatics' those who use it for more basic logging.

If you make a small margin on a lot of stuff, you make a lot of money. It's a leading online business.
They aren't running 600 legacy stores like Evans, and even Evans and Halfords (bikes) advertise everywhere.
It is a leading online business. In a market of about 2 of any size, and they own the other big one. And they're likely at saturation anyway, for advertising. Hitting the same few people on yet another platform isn't smart or necessary.
Beyond Sigma, Wiggle, Specialized there's barely any money in the industry really. Certainly not enough to be swimming in ad revenue. If they were going to monetise it with ads, then you'd have to have a much broader spectrum of advertisers on-board for it to make any sense. Which would likely ruin the look and feel of the site.
They have 50 million users. Not sure how many pay, but getting even a modest fraction of those to pay a sub is going to generate far more revenue than advertising.

I am happy to continue paying, lots of people complaining that they should be given something for free.
I know. I wonder what they do for a living? Hopefully their customers don’t pay anything.
If you use it every day, fine, it’s 13p a day. If you use it to log a single ride each weekend through the dry months, it’s a couple of quid a time, which isn’t cheap.
Just accept that different people find different things expensive and unjustifiable eh?

You’ve used strava free for 11 years but are now grumbling that some of the features you might have to pay for? Strava has always had a free and premium version, just some more features have now moved to the premium bit.

When strava went cap in hand to raise money, it was user stats and user data that investors wanted to look at.
When many companies move from free to subscription, they often do special offers/delay the introduction by a year etc for existing users to thank them for their loyalty.
All this 'used it for 11 years for free and now grumbling' is a naive and simplistic view El Stovey.
Rob helped Strava keep the lights on for 11 years.
