I have just recently picked this bike up from Halfords, and the cranks seems to be a long way from the frame. Is this normal?

Looks pretty normal for a square taper bottom bracket.

Seems to be plenty of clearance between the the pedal and chain stay.

Fair enough if that looks normal! Didn’t have anything much to compare it too apart from my gravel bike which is flush (pretty much) and have only just got back into cycling after about 10 years out so I’ve forgotten what normal looks like.

It just looks like all the grit/water/muck will get in there hehe

It will.
But the bottom bracket is a sealed cartridge type, so it shouldn’t matter.

And there is plenty of room for the grit/water/muck to fall out of it again.

It looks normalish...
The bottom bracket is a recessed fit into the frame, and that makes the crank look as if it's a long way out.

Edit to say that at first it looks as if they have chosen a narrow BB for the frame; but maybe the std square axle BBs just don't go that wide, and need the recessed fitting.

I’ve seen this kind of thing before and it just seems bad engineering and/or design if the way to get the cranks working normally is that?
