To cut a long and annoying story short, I need to buy some new 650B 27.5" wheels as the ones on the bike I bought are buckled. They looked alright until I tightened the spokes but you live and learn eh? It's a Specialized Rockhopper Pro and it has DMD Double Wall wheels on right now. I know nothing about bikes and brands, so I have no idea what I can buy that would be at least as good.

I've seen a pair of Shimano Deore XT wheels on ebay that look nice, but the ad says the rear wheel takes a 7/8/9/10 speed cassette. I have an 8 speed. How can it fit correctly if a 10 speed also fits? I've also seen some (used) Mavic XM319 wheels.

Sorry for the probably silly questions, but I'm keen to make sure I don't buy the wrong bits. Budget I'd be happy to spend £150, whether they're new or used. Not going to get anything world beating, but whatever the best I can get in this price range would do just fine.

These will take 11 speed which is the norm nowadays
Someone will be along to discuss spacers and cassettes I’m not sure but I think cassette bodies are similar sizes with the thickness of the sprockets reducing

Here's another question:

My front forks, the arch on them is so close to the tyre it rubs very slightly. The wheels are 650b and only wearing 2.10 tyres. How can I tell if the forks are for 26" wheels or 27.5"?

Are the rims actually buckled or just out of true because of your spoke tightening?

Try superstar components for cheap wheelsets.

Remember you need to know your hub widths, axle diameters, rotor mount types and freehub.

What forks are they, do you have a model number? They sound like 26" if there isn't much clearance with 2.1s

Is the frame a 650b frame? How's the clearance between rear wheel and seat tube?

Well firstly, I'm not entirely sure how tight they are meant to be. Having done a bit or reading and made my best guess, I can't say 100%. I will say though, that they weren't perfect before tightening, they just weren't out enough to really bother me and I figured I could live with it.

Here's how things look, clearance-wise.

That's only on 2.10 tyres! I'm now wading through trying to figure out axle size and the like. Ugh!

There is trueing and there is dishing a wheel. If there is clearance on the drive side of the frame, then it may need dishing, unless the wheel is that far out of true !!

Didn't know that. I will replace them with 26" but take them to a pro to check.

That definitely looks like a pair of 27.5s fitted to a 26 frame. What model of Specialized is it?

That frame is definitely for 26” wheels, recognise the decals although couldn’t tell you what year it’s from...

It's a Rockhopper Pro. Like I say, live and learn... Found a pair of 26" DT Swiss 445D wheels locally and agreed a price. They have a 9 speed cassette on them so I'll swap mine over. Conti tyres as well, quick release etc. Just hope they are right as I have no idea about axle sizes etc.

Just to reiterate what everyone else has said, that looks like a circa 2003 rockhopper pro. They came with 26" wheels and 2.0 tyres as standard, so I'm not surprised it's that snug with 27.5x2.1.

Most wheels from around that era will be standard QR hubs, so if the DT wheels you've found are QR they'll likely be fine

Well the saga continues... The wheels fit great, but now I am having crankset issues. Turns out one of the pedals has been cross threaded. It just gets better and better! rolleyes The Truvativ crankset looks to be a square taper and I have got a Shimano crankset off a friend to stick on it in the meantime. It also looks to be a square fitting. With my limited knowledge I thought great! Put it on. Then found that the front derailleur won't shift to the biggest cog with this crankset on. Nor will it adjust any further.

What have I done wrong?!

There is different axle lengths to suit different cranks in square taper.

What's the method of figuring out what I would need? It looks like the shell width is 68mm.

How close is the crank to the chainstay ? What is the length of the axle from end to end ?
As can be seen here on different axle lengths. 110mm is a 'usual' , hence why out of stock, but depends like I say on the crank design.

110mm available here if required
