Hi Guys,

I've just picked up an old Raleigh 'bitsa' and I would like to find out how old it is (even roughly). I've had a look on a couple of websites to try to track down the serial number, but that has proved pretty inconclusive.

There is a serial number stamped on the underside of the bottom bracket which reads "4260766", and a sticker at the bottom of the seat-tube that says Raleigh Industries Ltd, Made in England with the number 50623338 on it.

I got it from a lovely old chap who has had it 20 odd years, and said his mate gave it to him, so my guess is late 80s.

No doubt some pictures would be handy, so I'll try to upload some of those tonight...

A bit.

I can look up frame number specs, but found a really good page on it ages ago via retrobike.co.uk

I'll go dig it out. What colours, etc is it? Do you have any pics?

That's specifically for lightweight division but may link to others.

Some photos below. It’s purple and silver, with a sprayed blend line. No stickers or vinyls at all other than the one at the bottom of the seat tube.

I think that particular BS6102/1 is from 15/09/1992 onwards if that helps date it

I’m not an expert, but if the forks are original then I’d guess it’s a 1990s bike. 80s forks had lugged ‘shoulders’.
If it isn’t the original fork, then the whole bike has had a respray.....that would also explain the lack of stickers.

If it has Weinman brake calipers, they are usually year stamped which should enable the bike to be dated within a year or two. You will need to take them apart to see the stamp though.

Looks like a very nice bike by the way.

Thanks gents, some useful information there.

The BS date is a good spot! I looked up the Raleigh Industries Ltd name and it looks like that particular identity was established on the 30th October 1991, so I guess that sets the earliest possible date.

Looks like early 90s is most likely, but the shifters and brake levers look older than that to me. Possibly a real bitsa thrown together by someone?

Unicrown forks like those put it firmly into the 90s.

Nice looking bike but it's a bit after my time to be able to identify. Hopefully someone here can though.

Failing that, again post it on Retrobike. Someone there will definitely know.

Looks like a Raleigh Scorpio, from the bottom end of the Raleigh line up.

Reckon that's it.

I’d say that’s it gents, thanks for all your help.

It looks like someone has fitted some side pull levers and moved the shifters to the stem at some point, which look significantly older than the frame. It’s got a big old extender tube in the stem too, so the bars are up level with the seat.

It’ll be in a hundred bits by the weekend...
