New to pedal power but have decided to buy a (cheap) hardtail MTB for a mixture of some trail and road riding.

I’ve been looking at something like a Whyte 629 but I can’t seem to find one at a reasonable price. There doesn’t appear to be any new ones really for sale (is it out of season/model range?), none on offer and any used ones are smaller frames, collection only etc.

New eBay ads that pop up have 40+ watchers straight away and end up at wildly differing prices. Seems there’s a lack of supply for bikes.

Where should I be looking to buy a New/Used ‘29er’? I’m checking eBay, Gumtree and Facebook marketplace/groups - but even there it’s either “I’ll take whatever you have for £200” or top of the range full suspension bikes.

Would happily spend £600-800 for the right bike that’s good value. Large frame, 29er, but struggling to find one.

Everyone has gone crazy for bikes since being on lockdown, if in no rush I would suggest to wait as there will be a lot of unused secondhand ones come onto the market once this is all iver with!

yes I bought my first decent bike in 2013, it was bought new just after the 2012 London Olympics and had been ridden ‘a handful of times’ in the wake of the games.

I got it for around 40% of the retail price a few months later..

Used bikes, and especially MTBs are a potential minefield for worn parts, bent frames etc. That sort of budget gets you into some perfectly acceptable new bikes like the Voodoo Bizango.

Just wanted to bump this as I still haven’t bought anything.

I was out with a few friends on hired bikes recently and I am back around to buying - although I’ve maybe missed the best part of the year for MTB.

Again I’ve been keeping an eye on used bikes but just can’t find anything in the right size or close enough to collect/ship.

I have come to terms with just buying a new bike and sort of settled on a Trek X-Caliber 8... but there even aren’t any for sale!

Some are showing next in stock dates for November, others March 2021. What is going on?

Does anyone know of a local shop etc that by some miracle has a Large Trek X Caliber 8 in Grey?

Give Manual Bikes (Halesowen) a call - he's a Trek dealer.

Don't give up on second hand. Have a look on Pink-Bike's buy and sell page.

Biggest seller of second hand MTB's on the net, and lots of folks selling now as post lock-down finances are getting tight. Some real bargains to be had.

If you're looking for mountain bike have a browse at the buy/sell on Pinkbike

Large community there and for the most part actual enthusiast so bikes have been well maintained and you can get some great buys.

Worth a shot - November stock is all sold apart from the ProCaliber. Next stock due in is June next year.
