Hi,

I'm new to this part of PistonHeads so please be gentle!

I'm usually wielding sockets and spanners at one of my cars, but my son came to me with his bike as it wouldnt stay in gear properly. When spinning the rear wheel there was a huge amount of wobble on the rear cassette.

When I removed it, the problems was clear, the freehub had sheared. I've managed to remove the threaded part from inside the hub, but now need to find a replacement. Where's best to buy? Searching the web brings plenty up, but they dont look exactly the same.

The pictures below show the hub with the broken part resting back on, and then the measurements of the sheared threaded section that was still inside the hub.

Any help would be much appreciated

Do you have any idea what make the hub of the wheel is?

Carrera normally use Shimano, would help to know how many speeds it is & the model of Shimano it could be Tourney but that is a guess.

The hub has no markings on it at all, so no clues there. The cassette is a Shimano Hyperglide HG 9 speed.

The wheels are the standard black wheels with Carrera XCD stickers on them.

Looking on Halfords, the blurb states 'black alloy' and thats it. I 'suspect' it to be just an 8 speed Shimano replacement , but Halfords dont state a freehub replacement.
Something like this 'might' fit.

You will need a couple of cone spanners and an allen key ( think its an M12 or M14) to then remove the tube bolt fitting the freehub to the hub.

That one doesn’t look the same in that the threaded bolt doesn’t protrude out the end like the original. It’s one piece, I’m it sure if others are two piece, but interchangeable.

Sadly I cant see any photos to help any more than I have. Sorry. These freehubs cover a wide range of Shimano style hubs. Are you sure you have removed the complete freehub from the hub and not unscrewed the inner part in the bearing race than dismantles the outer freehub shell ?

I cannot see your photographs, can you host them somewhere else?

Is the snapped bit actually part of the free hub or is it the free hub fixing bolt? Looks to be splined internally to allow you to use a 10mm Allen key to remove the bolt and free hub from the actual hub. If you google free hub fixing bolt there are plenty of images and new bolts seem to be around £4.

It might be something like a Formula hub (not the Formula that make decent disc brakes) as they supply a lot of OEM bits for lower-mid range bikes. Not the same as a genuine Shimano freehub. Also found on Trek/Bontrager and Cannondale wheels.

Hard to tell without being able to see the photos though. Maybe easiest to get hold of a cheap rear wheel from Planet X etc.?

It's part of the freehub. This one doesn't have a separate fixing bolt. It's all one unit. Internal diameter is just over 13mm, external just under 23mm.

Nice one. Thanks. looks like it'll do the job, although the bike will be out of action for a while whilst it's sent from the far east.

Wonder if there are any UK stockists....

Did you try Halfords? Carrera is their in house brand.

I had a nose there, but nothing in the list, but they should keep them for repairs in the branches.
St Johns have a few versions . Not sure if correct, but you get the idea...........

So, I've gone for this as the thread pitch looks closer and it says it's compatible with Shimano HG.

https://www.tritoncycles.co.uk/components-c9/hub-s...

I'll let you know if it fits!

Hi,

My son's bike has just failed the same way, I have not tried to get the sheared section out of the hub yet. Did that replacement part fit?

Hello

Just been browsing the internet and my son did the same on my bike! Wow! wonder if this is a common problem with Carrera bikes or a design fault. Has anybody found a part that would fit? I might pop into Ripoff Halfords and see if they can provide a part number.
