What do I need to ride again?
Discussion
I have an old Santa Cruz Superlight in the garage. Bought in 2011 (I think) for half a bag from a mate of my dad’s mates who had used it for 24 hour racing.
In the intervening years, it’s been through 3 house moves across two countries and has been ridden roughly once. In 2012.
Lockdown has, however inspired me to ride again. Preparation so far has stretched to pumping up the tyres, turning the hose on it to get rid of the dust from the garage, liberal application of 3 in 1 oil to the chain and riding it up and down our estate.
Everything seems to work, although the gear shift is a bit dodgy at the back and the rear brake lever (I think it’s a hope disc) is decidedly squishy. Front brake seems fine.
I’ve got a helmet, some gloves, some shorts and some inner tubes on order. Anything else I need to ride again? Any ideas on curing a squishy brake lever?

If they are Hope discs I am assuming they are Hydraulic, in which case they will need bleeding.
You can have a go yourself, there will be videos online on how to do it and you will need some brake fluid. For me personally, it would be a bike shop job as I am hopeless!
Your rear derailleur probably need indexing, again youtube is your friend here!

Yeah, they’re hydraulic disks. I’ll get a brake bleed kit. Can’t be that hard can it. Is there any special sort of fluid to use or are they all the same?
No idea about indexing it, but YouTube can ride to the rescue.
It’s been a long time since I rode a GT that was too small, with Marzocchi forks that were far too big, shimano v brakes and Tioga Downhill tyres to Blackpool from Manchester.....
I remember when 24” tyres were all the rage, now it’s hard to find 26” inner tubes and the cost of bikes seems to have gone through the roof
