‘The day’ being late ‘80’s, New Zealand.

I was a reasonably competitive amateur road and mountain biker who had rather expensive taste and no car (no license; I cycled everywhere).

Fast forward thirty odd years and I’ve just bought a pre-Trek Klein like I used to race, well, the frame, at least. It’s a complete bike, but it’ll get changed ASAP.

I’m utterly excited beyond belief! I’m going to attempt to build my old bike, if I can find everything I need.

Anyone else in here reliving their old cycling days on the same kit? Hell, any other Klein fanatics in here?

Cheers and roll on post lockdown!

Retrobike.com is a good place to buy all your old gear at a reasonable price.
I avoid ebay as the prices are high.

The old stuff is really durable and easy to disassemble so going NOS (new old stock) isn’t allways necessary.

Are you going to ride it or display only?

Ride!

I’m feeling a collection may be in the making...if it happens, they’ll all be ridden. No show ponies for me, smile

Superb!

I may well end up with a Klein road bike, too, as I seriously doubt I’ll be able to track down a Look KG76 frame to replicate my old race bike.

The KG76 wasn’t a stiff frame, but it was incredibly comfortable for the longer race.

Do yourself a favour and go for a Trek-era one as by that stage the BB, headset etc. were in line with today's standard.
The older ones (like mine) had loads of proprietary stuff which made a more modern build a complete pain (eg. 1 1/16th steerer).

I may do, but I’d prefer one built in Washington by the crew there.

I could never afford a Klein in the mid 90s

But I did wear the jersey biggrin I still have it now. Nostalgia I guess.

School friend had one. He used to race when Addiscombe Cycling Club used to race at Shirley Hills. Had Spds, a Flite seat and a 10g titanium seatpost bolt too! He was cool as fk! biggrin

Nice! I had a long sleeved T-shirt with the large Klein logo in the back...

On the front it said (& I st you not) “If it ain’t stiff and fat, it ain’t worth riding” laugh

Pretty much the holy grail of retro bikes these days. I'd love to build one of these up, but I'm sure that getting hold of all the parts will be a challenge.

I just watched this, essentially single gear bike up a 10% climb, brakes that look as useful as falling off, inner tubes carried on the chest.

If these guys were still alive today and saw some of the stuff even on these 'retro' bikes, pansy is probably the least offensive term they would come out with!!

Those Kleins are stunning. I always wanted one and still do. Maybe one day.
I used to belong to Addiscombe CC and race at Shirley Hills too. The bike below is what I used to race although it has been re-built since then.
