I want to install some of these:

Cable Ferrules

I'm kind of imagining that there's a 'proper' tool to put them on with that produces a nice looking crimp. Otherwise they'd look a bit bodgy if I attack them with pliers. Anyone know what that tool is called, or better still, got a recommendation for one?

There isn’t one, really. “Proper” cable cutters may have two “prongs” on the inside of the handles near the top to pinch/crush the ends of the cap together. But other than that, pliers will work just as well.

Only ever used side cutters and a couple of 'pinch's' and that's all good and done. Just dont pinch too hard or you will cut them as only soft alloy.

I find cutting the cable cleanly is key, then use waterpump pliers to crush the crimp.

You could maybe look at a hex crimp tool. Not sure if they would work. I work in aviation so use quit a lot of crimp tools but I'm not familiar with any tool to crimp the end on brake cables. A hex crimp tool might work. Would give a nice finish if it worked.

Failing that do what everybody else does and use a pair of pliers to crush it on.

These are what I use. There’s a crimping tool within the handle space as you can see in the pictures.

In the electrical world they (should) use a hexagonal crimp tool to terminate ferrules on to stranded cable. Amazon have a wide choice although you'd have to take a bit of a guess which one might suit your purpose.

CN10 from Park to cut and then either use them to crimp or glue them in place. Crimping is quicker.

I have the Topeak long nose pliers which have a little crimper bit in the jaws especially for end caps, does a lovely neat job.

BUT

If you need to but something, get some flat faced Knipex adjustable jawed pliers. These are just fantasic for so many jobs and because of the smooth jaws also do a very neat job on end caps.

As above I use a set of park cable cutters

and just crimp them with the little notch on the inside.

my pair are 20+ years old and do a much better job with cutting and crimping that just trying to use normal pliers.
