Hi

During these times of restricted movements, I take my kids out on their bikes for daily exercises. One of their bikes is slipping gears and I'm hopeless with maintenance of gears.

Do you think hooking the bike to my vehicle and taking it to the bike shop for a service would be acceptable during these times?

Is the bike shop open?
If it is, go ahead.... Exercise, isn't it.

Yes, shop is open and bike is booked in for tomorrow. Strictly speaking, driving to the bike shop with the bike on a cycle carrier for maintenance is not exercise.

I hope common sense prevail.

Bike shops are one of the few trades other than supermarkets who are allowed to open.

Ergo you are allowed to visit one. (As long as it's not 200 miles away)

I’m taking mine in on Saturday but I’m also going shopping so it’s not a special trip.
Kids bike will it fir inside the car? I could put mine in the car but I’d rather use the carrier

Nah, the bike is actually a small adults size, so I'll need to fit it to the tow bar carrier. I'll chance it in the morning and again later in the day when I collect it.

I know cycle shops are allowed to open, I know we are allowed to exercise on bikes but it's not clear if we are allowed to go out and get our bikes maintained.

What I've read is that cycle shops are allowed to remain open to ensure key workers can buy or maintain their bikes if they use them for commuting to work. I asked the shop what their understanding was and they said they don't know! I guess they are unsure too given the lack of clarity.

Halfords is open, but you have to book online for pick up, and no one can go into the shops, you have to queue at the front door where staff will go and get bits you want from the shop.

The bike workshops are fully open, but you will struggle to get them on the phone as it's a skeleton staff. Go first thing they open and there is no queue, you can than drop your bike off for pick up later.

Hi

I'm hopeless with maintenance of gears.
Come on Dad, I'm not having a go, I appreciate we've all got specific interests and skills, but really it's pretty fking simple. There's a barrel adjuster, or maybe two, which effectively give small adjustments to the cable length... Turn bike upside down, find gear it jumps out of, turn barrel adjuster until it no longer jumps out of gear.

I'm pretty sure even reindexing the gear from scratch is not beyond you, there's plenty of videos on youtube of how to.

One of ours is currently in the shop for brakes; because I simply don’t have the time to sort it at the moment.

You're trolling now. We are allowed to use our cars, even to go elsewhere to exercise. But that's for other threads.

All done, no problems at all despite driving past a busy police station twice thumbup

I asked the guys how to adjust the gears for next time. It is indeed a simple measure once you know how to, but at least the bike was fully serviced.
