Hi All,

I am considering buying a BMX solely for urban riding (street riding and learning some basic tricks).

I am 36 year olds, 5ft10 and weigh about 72kg, so looking for a bike with a top tube length of between 20" - 21" so that it is not 'small' for me. Apart for riding one as a kid in the 80/90's I have no experience of BMX bikes, good/bad brands etc. so would value any advice.

I know that Chromoly frames are the way to go as well as a 3 piece crank, but I have a budget of around £350 tops so not sure I can get such a high spec (or even if I need it for what I intend to use it for). So far I have been thinking about the following bikes:

https://www.damianharriscycles.co.uk/prod/bmx_3585...
https://www.sourcebmx.com/products/fit-series-one-...

I already have a road bike which I hardly ride as I do not like the seating position (bent over the bars) and using cleats and the lack of agility in the bike. I am not sure if a mountain bike might suit me better, but I do not plan to be riding on any trails and want maximum agility. I know I wont be anywhere near a hardcore BMXer but I do not care about that.

Some questions:
1) Why is it recommended the front brake be removed?
2) Will the rear brake be enough for braking in the street?
3) Should I pay the extra for the bike to come 'built' or is it easy enough to put the bike together?
4) Are their any good sources of BMX info for adult beginners?

Ans:
1) Its not, who recommends that?! I sometimes ride three, front/back & coaster pedal back brake.
2) Depends on how fast your going, good for skids!
3) Easy to build if you know how, It will be more expensive to buy parts & do your own compared to buy a complete but you can get it as you like
4) Millions on facebook, check out 'Ride on' and also 'Over 35's freestyle BMX' Lots of how to vids & advice about everything.

Bikes depend on budget, Haro have brought out some lovely bikes with ab 80's retro look, check out the Lineage range & if you look at the 2018's there are some bargains. There are lots of old schoolers still riding, im 49 (soon to be 50) & ride most days. Just get out & enjoy playing, don't take it to seriously and dont expect to ride like you did back when you were 15. It hurts more now when you fall off than it did back then. Just have fun biggrin
