Selle Royale - insert Gel Pad

I’ve had a Selle Royale saddle on my MTB for ages, probably done 2500+ miles. The front of the gel insert came unstuck so I got a replacement from eBay which failed in the same way in less than 50 miles.
Was it just crap, is there a source of OEM gel pads, is it my abrasive crotch, do I need it at all, should I get a new saddle, if so what? I don’t know what this saddle model is by the way.
Any advice?
