Just heard that this has been cancelled, no surprise. What is surprising is that they are not offering a refund, or even a deferred entry to the next staging of the event.

Can confirm, had my cancellation email from them this afternoon.

On refunds it states that their insurer doesn't cover this circumstance and that the business can't absorb the cost of refunds due to committments already made.

Fairly trivial in the scheme of things at the moment and understand why things are this way but still disappointed.

Doesn't bode well for Velo Essex then...

Appreciate it's September but can't see this being all done and dusted by then.

Their business will probably go bust after this, not offering refunds is very shoddy.

Apparently they have said that if Velo Essex goes ahead everyone can transfer to that. Velo Essex entries have closed in case it needs to be cancelled as well.

I was doing Velo Birmingham and whilst I can understand they would have spent some of the entry fee by now there must be a significant amount they haven't spent. Problem is they were on to a no win, there has been pressure on them to say if it was going ahead. Social media and gossip etc wouldnt enable them to cancel the event, close off contracts work out what they have spent so they could then work out what they could refund. Had they announced we are going to look to see if we can refund anything then they would have been inundated with questions as to when and how much. However there seems no doubt it should have been handled differentky!

I suspect that after their West Sussex event was cancelled at the last minute their insurance cant have been cheap!

Surprised at the no refund. I was on velo south when the storms forced a cancellation. I am sure I could've had a refund or an entry to Birmingham, so I did last years birmingham one.

I’m probably clutching at straws here but FWIW, as well as paying up for Vélo Essex, I also have tickets for Goodwood FoS. Got an update from FoS yesterday to advise that event is postponed from July and is tentatively planned for September, the weekend before Vélo Essex. So if they think it’s ok to reschedule a mass event like that to just before VE then maybe...

Appreciate the bigger picture here but at the end of the day people aren't going to buy into this in future with the prospect of losing their money in the event of a cancellation - If they can't get insurance to cover that or finance any kind of deferral option then perhaps it's best if they call it a day

I had a place in the Fred Whitton this year - whilst that has been cancelled everyone that had a 2020 entry has got a free entry into 2021

Velo Essex now cancelled.

They are offering a partial refund but I cannot see in their terms and conditions that they can't pay a proper refund.

There is no way they've spent all that money.

Very shoddy and I wouldn't be surprised if they find themselves boycotted next year.

It was an expensive event for what wasn't the most inspiring route.

Not happy.

Just seen it too. Did they give you 45%? I assume is the same % for everyone but a non-cycling friend of mine was doing the 50miler so will see if he gets the same. I live up near Halstead and, like you say, nothing particularly special about the route but was looking forward to having a closed road even that was partly on roads I'm familiar with.

Yes 45% refund here.

Very frustrating but apparently they did this last year with the other Velo South event?

I vaguely remember someone from the club saying that re V South. COVID is one thing, but they're not doing themselves any favours if they just keep cancelling. I think ToC entries were deferred. I see V Essex are saying they can't because the event is at risk but what was their excuse for V Birmingham which is well established?

Interesting that PRL100 still has their countdown running, and that's a month earlier.

Velo South was a full refund last year when they cancelled. I assume that was because their insurance covered it for the bad weather cancellation but it won’t for a pandemic.

Well that was their excuse for cancelling anyway.

I'm not massively happy with the 45% refund, but it's better than nothing.
It's paid for my next 6 months of Xbox live and Game pass, so not the end of the world.

Glad I paid for Birmingham on Amex - full refund for me.
