To take my mind off the news I thought I tidy up my old bikes after recently getting back into commuting on the bike;

Trek 3.1 Madone from 2011, with Dura Ace wheels+Look Pedals, good old fashioned 105 groupset - 7.8kg


Old Carrera Gryphon 2008, cable pull disc brakes, platform pedals - 11.7kg


My current 4 weeks old Boardman 8.9E, with pedals which I've used almost daily for the last 4 weeks - 15.7kg


I’m not even going to work out the £ per kg weight of these bikes, as the 2008 Gryphon which I bought 2nd hand for £150 back in 2015 would win hands down smile

I know the Boardman is electric but it still surprised me how ‘good’ interns of weight bikes from over a decade ago compare to bikes today. I notice the current Boardman non electric comes in at virtually the same weight as the old Gryphon. The current cheapest Trek carbon frame road bike is the Emonda which I notice comes in at 7.6kg, so again almost identical weight to a bike from 10 years ago.

I’ve not been into proper cycling gear for years now, so I don’t know what the current ‘fashion’ is, but I presume weight is still the a key selling point?? If so it doesn’t look like much has changed on that front?

I was thinking once I get my fitness back I could treat my self to a more uptodate road bike, but am not sure I see the point? The 105 shifters on my Trek work perfectly even after sitting there unused for 3 years+, all I’ve done is wiped them down and given a spray of good old fashioned WD40. Even the old rim brakes/pads are fine (obviously without WD40) wink.

So for those people who are more uptodate with bike gear, whats changed in the last decade? Am finding it hard to see the need for me to go and buy more up to date gear??

Not really about wright in recent years: it’s fairly easy to make a bike that is too light to be uci race legal

The combination of aero without sacrificing weight is where it is at these days

And disc brakes and electric gear shifts and stiff / responsive

Any advantage to going electric shifting?

Disc brakes I do like over rim ones.

I think I could be tempted to source something like this Focus Paralane 2 but without Fazua motor/battery as I already have the motor/battery in the Broadman. Though it would still feel very wrong to spend a stupid amount of money getting a bike that's heavier than one I already have??
