Seems like a fair swap etc etc

It’s my wife’s birthday in a months time and I want to get her a bike - there’s no passive aggressive hint here, the kids are just old enough and able enough for us all to go on rides together.

Not a huge budget £200 (£300 absolute max)
Hybrid preferable but suspension not needed. It’ll be used for riding to the local country park which has mostly dirt paths. It’s barely off road.

It’s also flat so loads of gears aren’t essential, 3 gears would suffice but obviously if the right bike had 18 that’s fine.

No preference on disk or rim brakes.

I’ve seen Apollo and Carrera brands on Halfords website, are they any good? Any other brands I should look at? Pinnacle?

Thanks

At that price point you may be better looking at 2nd hand or end of line.

I have a pinnacle Neon 3 and use it daily for commuting and couldn't rate it high enough.

How about Calibre -

Decathlon do some nice bikes.

They seem to be built in Portugal, where labour rates are low, so you get a
lot of bike for your money, compared to many other companies.

Pretty sturdy too. My current Decathlon MTB rarely needs repair work,
compared to other bikes I've owned.

Another vote for decathlon.

Does she want classic:

Or modern:

The thing you’ll usually find with decathlon is that the models in this price bracket do the job pretty well but will be a bit weighty.

You may laugh but look at Halfords.

Got my better half an Apollo for under £200 and it has been excellent, built it from the box and it built and rides really well.

Go outdoors or decathlon will be better than Halfords at £200.

I would be getting one from decathlon if I had a wife to buy one for smile

Another vote for Decathlon, anything Halfords and especially Apollo will be very heavy and come garnished with the cheapest of tat components.
Definitely go modern mtb or hybrid style as the classic ones are awful to ride, especially if your other half hasnt ridden for awhile. (The mother in law chose a Pendelton from Halfords to get back into cycling...she tried it twice, fell off twice and now it gathers dust in her garage!)
As always, get her to try some out and get the right size.
