I'm travelling from Birmingham to Brighton on Thursday to visit some friends over the weekend and wanted to stop off en route to have a blast on my new Marin Rift Zone (well second hand on Ebay). Any suggestions? Thanks

Aspley woods in Woburn Sands is a few minutes away from the M1:

Or, Aston Hill isn't too far from the M40:

Ever been to Swinley Forest (Bracknell)? Its basically "Cannock Chase-lite", and while you sometimes get so-called hardcore MTB'ers slagging it off, I think its impossible to not have fun blasting around. I live right at the trail start, so am unusually there a couple of times a week.
No real difference between the blue and red trails in terms of skill level (and together, I would class them just under Cannock's Red, but only just) and combined distance of ~13 miles / 1,000ft of climbing.

Isn't Aston the spot to be avoided like the plague when it's wet - chalk layer makes it as slick Trump's legal team.

You could just turn off the M23 where it crosses the A27, park at Devil's Dyke and hit the South Downs Way. 40 miles east and west, a few trails running north-south.
