Road routes North Lake District

Have got a week away with the family booked for the summer in the North Lakes, looks like I'll be able to get a couple of medium distance rides in of between 35-50 miles. Don't want to disappear for too long by myself. will be taking my road bike as MTB will involve driving to the start of the route which will eat up valuable time.

Any recommendations for decent routes around Ullswater, Keswick kind of area?

I found what seems like a suitable route but it involved a long stretch of the A6 up to Shap which I wasn't sure about in terms of fast traffic.
