I'm getting ready to build a mtb for xc duty. Nothing serious, just a few trails and general riding. I haven't ridden a bike in years, however one thing I remember is that I always found it painful to ride sitting down. The trouble is that I have a boney arse and it causes a pressure point and then pain ensues, so most of my riding is done standing. Does anyone have any experience with this?

I suffer with the same, having tried many different makes and types, i found the Ergon range..i have a Ergon SMC4-L on my mtb, was very comfy when i did the London to Brighton off road.
I used their website that has a seat size guide and thats a great help.

Saddles are notoriously difficult to recommend for someone else. I find trial and error is the best way. Find a retailer who allows saddle trials, get the one that feels the best. My personal preference for MTB saddles is a flat short nose, with a pressure relief cut out / channel, made of memory foam. Weirdly, Aldi had a superb MTB saddle in their bike bits extravaganza this year ( and last year ). I’ve actually got it on one of my road bikes, because it’s better than most of the road bike saddles I’ve tried.

As mentioned above, find a local retailer who lends out saddles, from memory Selle SMP/Specialised are quite common. You should be able to find one that fits your sit bones, they generally come in 3 widths, and some in different lengths.

Personally I run either Fizik or Fabric, after lots of testing. If you've been off the bike a while, you will need to acclimitise your ass for a little while, padded shorts also help.

Get your sit bones measured - I’m a svelte, Jaggeresque 10.5 stone 30” waist dude, who after having problems found I have very wide sit bones!

I’ve tried loads of saddles, but always come back to Charge Spoon (now owned by Fabric) - they’re pretty cheap which also helps!
