I’m cycling from Bulle, in Switzerland to England, Via France, in June. It sounds like it’s going to be a laugh. Anyone else doing any touring rides of note next year?

Considering a tour of the Netherlands, potentially cycle up to Manchester Picadilly from south cheshire, then transpenine express to hull and ferry across to Rotterdam.

I've always wanted to see what proper cycle infrastructure looks like and I understand even from the port they have segregated cycle infrastructure.

Probably include Amsterdam, Haarlem and Utrecht, but really haven't done any detailed planning yet.

This on my trusty Croix De Fer.

Not a tour by any means, but I'm looking at going to Haelnes in Denmark for their 24hr race. Flying from HK to London to meet my dad then drive up. So it'll be an adventure, but not in the sense of your original question!

Having retired I can now indulge in some longer adventures , subject to approval by the manageress of course, so some 3 or 4 day rides using airBnb , maybe take the train as far north as I can then ride home. I like to include some off road in my rides where possible so planning to ride to Brecon then spend a few days riding the area before riding home.

I have found Komoot a great route planning tool as you can select the type of route, road bike, touring or mountain bike, I find the MTB routes fine for my Croix de Fer.

I've done this a few times and it's ace! Go for it, you won't be disappointed. Try looking at the eurovelo website for inspiration.

We did Manchester - train - ferry - Rotterdam to Morzine last year and it was great.

I've been looking at Bankok to Koh Chi Min City next year. Might also do the west coast of France, maybe as far as Portugal.

I love trips like this!

What's everyone's experience of places to stay that are bike friendly ? i.e., safe place for bike/bike allowed in room, I am thinking just UK at the moment, any to avoid?

Pretty much any Travelodge is cool with bikes in rooms, in my experience. Often if you’re stopping in something else, if you ask, they’ll lock your bike in an office or conference room.

Not strictly on thread, but I'm thinking of doing the South Downs Way in a day next summer. I did it 10 years ago, so it seems like a good reason to get my fitness back to that level. I'm lucky enough to live about half way along, so if it doesn't go well I have an easy bail out option.
It's 5 years since I Everested too, there's a proper mountain I could do, but will see how the South Downs Way ride goes before I commit to that.

Thanks, that's useful to know!

That’s quite some challenge though on the basis you’ve done it before you obviously know that! I’d love to do it in a day despite failing to do it in two over the hottest weekend of this year 39 degrees according to the garmin!)

I've been pondering this, on a 20 year old hardtail I'm slowly converting to a sort of tourer. Think I might start off with a couple of the nearby national cycle routes as far as they go, then progress abroad.

I feel it's best to get a train 1 way then cycle back? Otherwise if I take a ferry crossing then say cycle to Germany, it's a bleeding long way to cycle back.

I'm hatching two plans at the moment.

First is the Welsh 3 peaks, so climbing Snowdon, Cadair Idris and Pen Y Fan, and cycling the 135 miles between them, all in less than 24 hours.

Second is an end to end attempt, just not sure which way round yet.

Hoping to do a mini tour from York>Hull>Zeebrugge then ride out from Bruges taking in various cycling sites such as Roubaix etc.

£500 all in look achievable for a four day adventure.

Yes should be doing a self-supported week-long bikepacking tour from Innsbruck, heading south to the Italian Dolomites then back to Austria over the Grossglockner High Alpine Road, then into some German mountains and back to Innsbruck. A 900km loop with over 20K of elevation.
Apparently June is a great time in the Alps because there’s still lots of snow on the mountains which looks nice in the summer sunshine.

Will aim to book places to stay at lunchtime (or sometimes later in the afternoon depending on route) each day to find the evening’s lodgings. We perfected this technique last trip and it works well. It removes the stress of finding a hotel and means we can secure decent prices.

I'm doing the Welsh coastline in 7 days, Chester to Chepstow, aiming for late June early July just before school summer holidays.
