Ive just purchased a bike in the hope of getting healthy, and my biggest issue is the pain of the seat . Can't Bare it . Can anyone recommend me a comfortable seat , im quite a big chap so it would need to be big. Ive seen a few on the net but thought id see if anyone has any recommendations.

Big saddle doesn't mean comfortable unfortunately. Infant I could mean quite the opposite.

Unfortunately you need to try lots till you find one that suits you but even then you need to get yourself used to sitting on a saddle too. You have to break yourself in as well as the saddle itself!!

Also saddles are very much a personal choice. What works for me wont work for others and vice versa.

I would suggest getting yourself to a decent independent bike shop and seeing if they have test saddles you could try? Brands like Fizik do test versions of there saddles to allow shops to lend them out.

If you’re new to cycling then the saddle will likely hurt regardless of whether it fits you. I would suggest sticking it out for a while as your arse will adapt somewhat. If it continues to hurt then pop along to your nearest Specialized store and get measured. Until then don’t be hasty - buying an random saddle is a gamble and your current one may be fine.

That's where it's supposed to hurt, if it's not in your gooch, bks or inner thighs and that the saddle you have isn't probably too bad, you're supposed to sit on the bone, could be cheaper to try some other shorts with increased padding rather than swapping saddles, I'm not an expert but I think if you ride it out you'll be surprised how quickly you get over it.

I was in a similar position 6 months ago - got one of these and it's improved things.

Doesn't cost much to find out if it works for you smile

Just beware some symptoms are due to seat being too soft and bones having poor contact with saddle so muscles get damaged.

Brooks are hard leather. Can sit in them 8 hours.

Also worth getting a bike shop, or simply an experienced cyclist, to take a look at your position on the bike. It may be that your weight distribution is wrong or that the saddle is positioned inappropriately with respect to the cranks for you. Also make sure the saddle is absolutely level (in the first instance).

This is probably the correct answer.

The saddle is applying pressure where you're not used to it, but it's meant to support you on your sit bones. If it doesn't feel like it's rubbing you raw or trying to batter the hell out of your giblets, it's probably not that far off being right.

Give it some time and see how it feels.

Buy some decent cycling shorts.

As above I can remember having the same problem, it does ease off. You may as well embrace it and buy some bib shorts, your ass will thank you. Can always wear them under normal shorts if so inclined.

When i restarted a cpouple of years ago my arse was soer for a while, got some proper cycling shores (Decathlon 100) then some better shorts and it was fine.

Borrowed and tried a bigger saddle and there was just too much between my legs so returned it.

When I moved from 30 minute rides to 45 minuted I started getting pain again, arse now acclimatized and now just complains at the hour mark. May just need some time to get used riding.

It’s more about the profile, and material of the saddle, than the size per se. Find a bike shop that will allow you to try different profiles, and materials out. There are about 3 or 4 profile types, Hammock ( or curved ) is an ‘Everyman’ profile, and what you find fitted to the majority of road / gravel / adventure type bikes, off-the-peg shelf. Flat saddles are just that, and better suited to people with seat areas which are a bit more conditioned to riding, TT saddles tend to be very stubby, and allow you to get into a more aerodynamic riding position, more easily. Then there’s ‘Touring’ which are typically wide at the back, and more traditional at the nose ( Brooks saddles, favoured by Audaxers) are this type, and although comfortable, when conditioned, they aren’t for everyone. Personally, I favour a flat Carbon fibre saddle, for shorter faster rides, and a memory foam ‘hammock’ for endurance rides. Everyone is different, so getting a proper saddle fitting done may well help you out.
