I swear by Castelli, I’ve never been disappointed with the products and think they are worth the expense.

The skull caps and ear bands are good for the cold. Their gloves are good also. The Lightness glove covers you unless it is freezing, but I have the Spettacolo glove which are really toasty but not waterproof.

Espresso 4 jacket is warmest I have and it really is warm. The Perfetto with good base layer covers a lot of temp range. I tend not to go much more the LW bib trousers but have the Nano flex pro bib trousers for very cold, but they are very warm - Rarely used.

Sales are best time to buy (obviously), but what I mean is eye up the options and grab them when they are a bit cheaper. No good on run up to this winter though!

I have this jacket and its superb. High single figure temps I wear it with just a short sleeve base layer. Temps like today low single figures then I wear a long sleeve base layer. Its waterproof in that it has a DWR treatment so the rain will eventually soak the material but if you keep moving you wont get cold. I wear for road and MTB. I did consider buying a second one earlier in the year when they were discounted to less than £200.

I can't comment on the castelli jacket (other than it looking like a serious bit of kit!) but I've recently picked up a shimano windbreak jacket https://www.freewheel.co.uk/shimano-clothing-mens-... and been amazed at how warm it is. Wore it today for a couple of hours with just a short sleeved mesh base layer and was fine - it was ~6 degrees and breezy. I doubt it is as warm as the alpha ROS but for £60 you can't go wrong and a thicker base layer should easily see me down to freezing. It uses various different fabrics in relevant places so is still a well designed, technical jacket.

Out of interest how does the waterproofing compare with the Perfetto?

I love Castelli shorts and summer jerseys but I am very unimpressed with the Perfetto's performance in even light rain. I have a older Gore jacket with a different type of Gore Windstopper to the Perfetto which is much better in showers.

Well I have the perfetto as well but I haven't used it for a couple of season. The Alpha is altogether different because it has multiple layers and its without question the best cold weather cycling jacket I have had. It isn't 100% waterproof so 3-4 hours in persistent rain and you will be wet but as I said previously as long as you keep moving you wont be cold.

Surely a good jacket

There is a chpt3 equivalent at £275. Looks nice

https://chpt3.com/products/chpt3-alpha-ros-jacket-...

I’d also consider this £100 assos

I have the light and the full version. It's a very warm jacket, worn with anything more than a mesh vest it's only really for weather below 5c. I've been out in it in weather 5-10c and it's been very sweaty. The light version obviously doesn't have as much insulation and so is for more temperate conditions.
