Usual search brings up a few. I can check on the charities commission web site etc. but not really knowing what I am looking at. Anyone done this before, and how do you know it is a good charity?

Our local prison takes bikes as charity donations, the prisoners work on them and they then send them out to Africa.

Done it with my mums old bike and the kids ones.

I've donated bikes and parts to a local cycling club. Especially useful for young newcomers with limited budgets. Helps them upgrade to a larger frame or update items. Anything not of use goes in the after season jumble sale for club funds. I had this help 50 years ago, and pleased to be able to do it now.

Our local church takes in second hand bikes, then makes them roadworthy again (with charitable donations) and sells them on.

Last two kids bikes have been bought this way and we then return them to be sold again. For us, it is a cheap way to get a roadworthy bike for the kids for about £25.... far better than some of the tat I have seen on Gumtree etc.

OK, ta. Looks like the prison option is not operating in my area.
Local charity I have given to before is an option if they take adult bikes. (I understand the issue that they may not be able to deal with them safely in this day and age).
One that ships them to programs in Africa is also an option, donations go through the local Halfords.
Cannot see the local cycle clubs on line as such in my area.

I'm not sure where you are based but can I recommend Cyclists Fighting Cancer - https://www.cyclistsfc.org.uk/ ?

They provide bikes for kids with cancer - including special adaptions to enable them to ride. Its a brilliant scheme and their instagram feed is full of small children having a great time. If you donate a good adults bike then I think they sell them through the shop to raise cash for the above.

Thanks.
Still a bit far though. Probably the Africa one or the local charity that does seem to take adult bikes.

Searches are rather hit and miss for around me.

Search for the name of your local town and "bike project". Near us we have the Bristol Bike Project and the Gloucester Bike Project.

They help people who are out of work/down on their luck to learn a trade mending bikes, and they supply donated bikes to people who'd otherwise not be able to get around the place at a very cheap rate. Basically looking to help people who want to help themselves out of poverty.

I've sent loads of old components to the Gloucester Bike Project (you know, the ones you'll always get around to listing on Facebook Marketplace "one of these days" and never bother to) and they were very grateful.

Afraid another not close.

I have found a kids hospice charity that say they will take it providing it is in good order. Seems there is some concern past a kids bike as to the state it is in. I can understand that.

Thanks for the input.

This is the local place in Taunton if you fancy a trip over the bridge and down the M5 - http://on-your-bike.org/

Though I expect you'd have passed countless others by that point!

I've only ever donated the kids bikes to them I think. Bought an Orbea road bike off them about a year ago which must mean it's due its first free service.
